Great Narrator, Okay Story
Revisado: 01-01-25
Johnathan Keeble is as excellent as always. As for the book, it’s a very short and minor novella that mostly exists to have a single cool battle in it (which in turn mostly exists to make you want to but Stormcast Eternals miniatures). It’s good for that. The moment when the Stormcasts first emerge is very cool, the action is efficient, and the little character vignettes are interesting. But it’s also far from the height of what Wraight is capable of, and I was kind of disappointed.

Historia
Harry Bodie has a famous grandmother, who wrote beloved children's books set in the delightful world of Underhill. Harry himself is a failing kids' television presenter whose every attempt to advance his career ends in self-sabotage. His family history seems to be nothing but an impediment. An impediment . . . or worse. What if Underhill is real? What if it has been waiting decades for a promised child to visit? What if it isn't delightful at all? And what if its denizens have run out of patience and are taking matters into their own hands?

This book rules. And Tchaikovsky is a pretty good narrator, although the parts where he missed a line and had to go back to rerecord it are a little too obvious.

A Masterpiece
Revisado: 10-09-24
After the masterpiece of The Hollows, I was kind of concerned how Daniel Church would top himself. That novel is massive, an epic of horror. The answer was simple: he didn’t try. Instead, he’s adopted a more intimate scope, telling the story of one woman trying to cope with an evil that is specifically targeting her. And it works beautifully. Jenna is such a likeable and appealing character, and watching her struggle and cope and grow is wonderful. This is another masterpiece.

Historia
Cadia licks its wounds in the wake of the Thirteenth Black Crusade. The heretic forces retreat on all fronts. The day is won. But Lord Castellan Creed cannot rest easy. Something tells him the assault was a mere prelude to something greater, something more final. He is right. Out of the Eye of Terror comes Abaddon the Despoiler, at the head of a warhost unmatched in scale since the dread days of the Horus Heresy.

Great book, slightly ropey performance
Revisado: 04-17-24
I think the book itself is basically unassailable. It’s exciting and well-written and full of awesome heroics. But the reader here has problems. His Abaddon, Creed, Salvar, and Trazyn are all terrific. But he really struggles with female characters, and with differentiating minor characters. There were scenes with the twin canonesses talking where it was hard to tell who was talking. Finally, Games Workshop should have shelled out a few hundred pounds and gotten Emma Gregory to read Saint Celestine’s dialogue.

My name is Rex. I am a good dog. Rex is also seven foot tall at the shoulder, bulletproof, bristling with heavy calibre weaponry and his voice resonates with subsonics especially designed to instil fear. With Dragon, Honey and Bees, he's part of a Multiform Assault Pack operating in the lawless anarchy of Campeche, Mexico. A genetically engineered Bioform, he's a deadly weapon in a dirty war. All he wants to be is a Good Dog. And to do that he must do exactly what Master says and Master says he's got to kill a lot of enemies.

Rex is a good boy
Revisado: 03-09-24
Rex is the goodest good boy in all of fiction, and spending time with him was a delight. Audiobook is pretty good, with good voice acting. My only quibble is that sometimes, you could hear them doing some pretty rough inhales, which broke my focus on the book.

Now Regan and his men, ill-equipped and demoralised, must go behind enemy lines, find the missing Scion and uncover how his suit failed. Is there a new Ironclad killer out there? And how are common soldiers, lacking the protection afforded the rich, supposed to survive the battlefield of tomorrow?

Pretty good, narrator’s a little dodgy
Revisado: 01-15-24
I like the story of this pretty well. It moves fast, the concept is interesting, and it recognizes how terrifying Finns are. The narrator does okay, but he’s British and his American accent is pretty ropey. He does okay with the main character’s voice, but has trouble differentiating the other characters. Because of how the story’s structured this doesn’t matter as much as it might in another book.

Fun Old School Sword and Sorcery
Revisado: 12-26-23
Just a fun book. Reminds me of Robert E. Howard, albeit leavened with more humor than Howard usually put in. Just an agreeable mixture of jokes, horror, and dude hitting things with axes.
My only complaints are nit-picks with the narration. They didn’t cut out Keeble’s breathing, and something in his mic set up made his ths and s’ pretty sibilant. It wasn’t terrible, but bugged me some.
