Historia
When Union and Confederate forces squared off along Bull Run on July 21, 1861, the Federals expected this first major military campaign would bring an early end to the Civil War. But when Confederate troops launched a strong counterattack, both sides realized the war would be longer and costlier than anticipated. First Bull Run, or First Manassas, set the stage for four years of bloody conflict that forever changed the political, social, and economic fabric of the nation. It also introduced the commanders, tactics, and weaponry that would define the American way of war through the turn of the twentieth century.

Best book of this early battle

Interesting story, poor performance.
Revisado: 01-06-23
Biggest turn off is the reader’s attempt to dramatize the story by using a unrealistic southern accent.

Whispering voices on an audio book?
Revisado: 11-04-22
Whispering voices on this audiobook are not loud enough, and I would have to increase the volume to hear them. Books in which the author uses “different“ voices for different characters does not enhance my experience. I’d much rather have it read verbatim, in which words are used to indicate the different characters and their gender. In in my mind I can create a voice as I follow along.

Historia
On June 13, 1966, men of the 1st Recon Battalion, 1st Marine Division were stationed on Hill 488. Before the week was over, they would fight the battle that would make them the most highly decorated small unit in the entire history of the US military, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor, four Navy Crosses, 13 Silver Stars, and 18 Purple Hearts - some of them posthumously.

Engaging story by one who was there
Revisado: 12-28-20
It took awhile for me to become engaged with this book partly due to working from home. I normally listen to books driving to & from work and immerse myself in a story to blot out the frustration of traffic jams. The language understandably is rough and I chose not to listen when my wife was present. Once in a separate room I listened whole heartedly and was moved by this account of Marines on Hill 488 in Vietnam. .
If there are any shortcomings in the writings by soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines who where there, I overlook them. Instead I try to picture myself as an observer. However, having never been in combat, I can only picture myself there, never knowing the true horror of war.

This is an eyewitness - and eye-opening - account of some of the most savage and brutal fighting in the war against Japan, told from the perspective of a young Texan who volunteered for the Marine Corps to escape a life as a traveling salesman. R. V. Burgin enlisted at the age of twenty and, with his sharp intelligence and earnest work ethic, climbed the ranks from a green private to a seasoned sergeant.

Compelling story, held my interest throughout
Revisado: 06-06-19
Mr. Burgin tells his story with passion and he kept my interest throughout. He shares his personal story before and after the war. He does a good job painting a mental picture of his war experience. I was sad when the book ended. I cannot imagine the horrors of war the loss of buddies, friends, and loved ones.

Not my style but written by a famous author
Revisado: 04-23-19
I was somewhat bored throughout the book. I have to read the book to see how it was written. Did Hemingway write “obscenity” vs. actual expletives?

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Storyline good, delivery could be better

Story held my attention. The pauses between chapters and sections could have been be shorter. When listening through headphones I could hear the narrator inhale after sentence.
