Historia
Sonea is caught up in a confrontation between the hated Guild magicians and the angry youth of the slums. To her dismay, she discovers that she possesses the same powers as the reviled magicians. To avoid capture, she must seek protection from the city's feared underworld, The Thieves. In return, she must use her powers for them, but her magic never seems to do quite what she intends it to.

Very average.
Revisado: 04-02-25
Don't really understand the hype around this book. It is very meandering and often dull. it's written well, but nothing really happens in it.
Basic Summary:
A girl is found to be a wizard
They attempt to find her several times.
They find her.
They bring her back to the academy.
She spends the next 30% of the following chapters saying "I don't want to be a wizard!"
3/4 of the way through the book an antagonist is finally introduced and he's just a petty wizard holding the MC's simp friend in a cell to manipulate her.
The book is basically over at this point, so this is almost immediately resolved and then she suddenly wants to be a wizard.
The book kind of felt like a waste of time and I really wish the first book was cut down by 60% and was combined with the second book to make something more interesting.

Historia
The city of Bulikov once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world, enslaving and brutalizing millions - until its divine protectors were killed. Now Bulikov has become just another colonial outpost of the world's new geopolitical power, but the surreal landscape of the city itself - first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it - stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy. Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani.

Great book, slow start
Revisado: 04-02-25
I stopped reading the first time around because of how slow/unengaging the first 20% of this book is, but god am I glad I picked it back up. The story picks up and runs in the latter half and we get to see some extremely creative monsters and God Artefacts with bizarre magics. The characters begin to really bloom and Shara is one of the most unique MC's I've read in a long time. <÷3
Narration is good, but the narrator has a big problem with not knowing when to pause and often just keeps speaking in a run-on sentence fashion and has next to no variations on her voices. She also makes a lot of sounds she didn't cut from the audio, including several water bottle crunches and lip sounds. She often begins speaking so fast she ignores context and delivers lines in a clearly incorrect manner or lilt. The narrator isn't bad, but it feels like she was rushing the audiobook and didn't botherr to do any retakes or listen to the chapters back to check herself.

Historia
The battle for the emperor's throne grows ever fiercer. The City of Countless Souls cowers behind locked doors as the whims of the downtrodden and the powerful bring the great game of Araxes to its chaotic conclusion. With the soulblade at his hip and magic in his soul, Caltro's freedom is almost within reach. But as Temsa reign of murder clashes with Widow Horix's plans, the locksmith's fate becomes all the more entwined with the needs of dead gods, the Cult, and vengeful royals.

A perfecting ending. 😂

Everything coming full circle caught me off guard. Holy s**t I haven't cackled so much at an ending since Book 4 of John Dies At The End.

Fantastic prose. <3

Never knew what any of the character's motivations were, why anything was happening, or what the book was even really about, but I had a great time and I'm glad to be here. ^^
