Historia
Sent to a "therapeutic community" for autism at the age of 11, Todd Aaron, now in his '50s, is the "old fox" of Payton Living Center. A joyous man who rereads the encyclopedia compulsively, he is unnerved by the sudden arrivals of a menacing new staffer and a disruptive, brain-injured roommate. His equilibrium is further worsened by Martine, a one-eyed new resident who has romantic intentions and convinces him to go off his meds to feel "normal" again.

ouch... my heart
Revisado: 01-06-23
Having an autistic child myself... this was hard to get through... but in some ways, that's a good thing. I have a lot of questions about this book but because this was told from the point of view of the autistic man i suppose thats sort of the point ... so im not mad about it.. but this book mad me feel all the feels at different points. Its bittersweet - you are sad because he is missing so much and he doesnt even know it... but you are happy because he doesnt even know it and is happy with his life... like thank god he is so happy but at the same time thats so sad 😞 its often how i feel about my son. This was a good book for those wanting a peek in the nuerodivergent mind... the author did amazing at that portrayal. The only thing i disliked about this book was the ending... but thats also what made it feel authentic.. 😕 🤔 got me thinking .......

Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

i thought this was a great book. it kept me guessing to the end... BUT. the way that the author laid out the ending made it anticlimactic. but overall the book was great! oh! and i kinda wish the female voices sounded a bit different... they all sounded like the same person.

Historia
Stephen Smith is the boy who did not exist. Born out of wedlock in the early 1960s, Steve's parents - both devout Catholics - had felt so 'shamed' by their son's illegitimate birth that they hid him away from the world by locking him in the cellar...for 13 years. Apart from a few admissions to hospital as a result of his 'imprisonment', Steve remained in the coal cellar of the family home where he was deprived of daylight, his childhood, school and human contact until he'd reached his teenage years.

Revisado: 08-19-22
The reasoning behind my 5 stars is due to the bravery this man had to write this book. The story itself is traumatic. I had a really rough childhood but this was mind blowing to me. i almost had to stop listening. proceed with caution!!

It could have been shorter...
Revisado: 08-16-22
there was a lot of filler in this book . It could have been a bit shorter and the narrator has a nice soothing voice that would put me to sleep lol. The story itself could have been a little more put together... I mean what kind of woman is married to a man for 20 years and actually says "I never really asked him about him family" come on now. but overall it was decent.

Not for the faint of heart
Revisado: 08-16-22
I came to read this book after reading his brother's memoir "Look me in the Eye" knowing that this is a true story makes it a little hard to get through.... it is VERY vile you guys. Also there wasn't really an ending that made you feel closure either. This poor kids life was a train wreck. The one thing I will say is that - I didn't love how this kid portrayed his brother (with autism) maybe that's because his brother is such a good writer that I had no idea how he actually communicates in real life but based of his book - he seemed to have good communication skills. That's not at all how he is portrayed here. Maybe i will read the mothers memoir next just to see what the HELL she was thinking.

Historia
Autism Uncensored goes where no other book dares - revealing the private disgrace and self-blame about having a “defective” child; the near disintegration of marriage; the failure of the traditional behavioral interventions; and the mercenary way in which service providers prey on parents’ desperation for a cure. It is a personal manifesto about how a socially integrated life is attainable regardless of whether a child overcomes the major limitations of Autism, sparking a new conversation which goes beyond simply accepting persons with Autism for who they are.

Revisado: 08-16-22
I am a mom of a 5 year old going through very similar circumstances. I felt SO validated in my feelings for this book, I've actually reached out to and conversed with the author. There is a lot of negative comments about this book but I'm CERTAIN you wont find a single one of them from an actual special needs parent. You don't know until you KNOW. I highly recommend this book to parents of SN kids, it was the lecture I didn't know I needed and the validation I so desperately craved.
