Historia
For years, there have been whispers that, before his death, Van Gogh completed a final self-portrait. Curators and art historians have savored this rumor, hoping it could illuminate some of the troubled artist's many secrets, but even they have to concede that the missing painting is likely lost forever. But when Luke Perrone, artist and great-grandson of the man who stole the Mona Lisa, and Alexis Verde, daughter of a notorious art thief, discover what may be the missing portrait, they are drawn into a most epic art puzzles.

Terrible book with the worst narrator
Revisado: 07-20-24
I don’t often write reviews, but I listen to 100+ audiobooks per year, and this one was one of the worst. The narrator uses the same voice and intonation for all the characters which makes it virtually impossible to keep track of who’s who. There are so many characters and pov changes that it is confusing through the first 2/3 of the book, until he starts using names for everyone. I wish I had quit in the middle but I held on to see how it ended. Well, that was disappointing and predictable too. Save your money for something else. This wasn’t worth the $3 I paid for it.

Historia
The wife has it all. A big house in a nice neighborhood, a ride-or-die snarky best friend, Temi, with whom to laugh about facile men, and a devoted husband who loves her above all else—even his distaste for Temi. On a seemingly normal day, Temi comes over to spend a lazy afternoon with the wife: drinking wine, eating snacks, and laughing caustically about the husband's shortcomings. But when the husband comes home and a series of confessions are made, the wife's two confidants are suddenly forced to jockey for their positions, throwing everyone's integrity into question.

Terrible story - what happened next?
Revisado: 11-15-23
This story was awful. I thought it was going to wrap up and something interesting would happen but no. It ends with a big revelation and no resolution. Is the revelation the truth or a lie made up to break up the happily married couple? The characters were not likeable and this story fell flat. I’m glad I only paid $1.99 for this. If I had used a credit, I would have returned it for a refund. Awful awful awful. Don’t waste your time.

5 enthusiastic stars!
Revisado: 09-02-23
I will admit that I spent a good half of this book scratching my head and wondering, “where is this going and what do these police reports have to do with anything?” But I kept listening because the story was great, and of course it all came together in the end. I love it when the ending is a complete surprise, and I definitely didn’t see this one coming. This was one of my favorites this year and was my 49th finished listen in 2023.

Historia
In the early 1970s, in Stovall, Texas, seventeen-year-old Earl—a loner, dreamer, lover of music and words—meets Tina, the new girl in town. Tina convinces Earl to drive her to see her mother in Austin, where Earl and Tina are quickly separated. Two days later, Earl is being questioned by the police about Tina’s disappearance and the blood in the trunk of his car. But Earl can’t remember what happened in Austin, and with little financial support from his working-class family, he is sentenced for a crime he did not commit.

Gritty, raw, & tragic
Revisado: 05-27-23
I almost quit listening to this book about 1/3 of the way in (so much sex and sexual violence), but I’m glad I finished. The narrator is stellar, truly one of the best of the best. The story is hard. It’s about a 17 year old boy who is falsely convicted of murder and goes to prison for forty years. It would’ve impossible to think it’s going to be a bright and uplifting story. I don’t know what else I can say without giving spoilers, but I laughed and cried during the book. When Earl read Arthur‘s deathbed letter, I cried for an hour. It was just so moving.
The American prison system is full of Earls, and a lot of them are raped and suffer heartache after heartache. I personally served on a jury for a man not unlike Earl. (We found him not guilty but another jury might have convicted.) Unfortunately, the real world doesn’t end like Shawshank Redemption, and the fact that this book doesn’t detract from its beauty. If you can stomach hearing repeatedly about both men and women being raped, you will be rewarded with an emotionally rich and moving story that will stay with you for a long time.
