Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

His voice begins to drag after a while
Revisado: 05-07-25
The stories are medium, and the authors voice becomes tiring after a while.
The book itself is kind of paint by the numbers.
.............
Update.
Given recent revelations, Mr. Gaiman's voice isn't tiring it's like nails on a chalkboard. I'm going to wipe this out of my library and never buy anything else by him again.

Historia
From the earliest days of civilization, alcohol has been at the center of social rituals and cultures worldwide. But when exactly did drinking become a gendered act? And why have bars long been considered "places for men" when, without women, they might not even exist? With whip-smart insight and boundless curiosity, Girly Drinks unveils an entire untold history of the female distillers, drinkers and brewers who have played a vital role in the creation and consumption of alcohol, from ancient Sumerian beer goddess Ninkasi to iconic 1920s bartender Ada Coleman.

The mental smirk got annoying
Revisado: 03-09-25
A drinking game you can play while listening to the audiobook is taking a drink every time the author uses the words "patriarchy" or "patriarchal".
Liking history and alcohol, I purchased this on sale.
The author has a bad case of chronological snobbery and never considers drink as anything other than an unalloyed blessing.
She does read her work well.
Tom Standages book A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN 6 GLASSES is a better overview of the topic.

For seven seasons, Leslie Knope and the Parks and Recreation gang charmed millions of viewers with their quirky antics and unwavering positivity. The sitcom continues to be a fan-favorite for streaming services today, nearly a decade after its finale. Now for the first time, Jim O’Heir, who played the lovable Jerry (or, well, Garry/Larry/Terry/Barry, depending on the episode), invites listeners back to Pawnee for an exclusive look behind the scenes.

Too many political asides.
Revisado: 12-06-24
The writing was good but not great.
The love letter to the show and cast was nice but not amazing.
The periodic sniping at Republicans was annoying and the tonal shift it brought was jarring. If Chris Pratt had not shown himself to be kind and pleasant fellow to Mr. O'Heir and the rest of the cast before refusing to endorse politicians, I have a feeling Mr. O'Heir would not have handled it well.
The story about William Shatner being cold and uncomfortable about dealing with Mr. O'Heir while he was in drag for a dramatic role really didn't need to be told.
I loved the show but should have left it at watching the cast interact on panels and talk shows.

Historia
Working as an investigator for the supernatural elite means living by three simple rules: don’t ruffle feathers, keep the clients (vampires, shifters, witches, etc.) happy, and never give them a reason to want you dead. Simple. Unfortunately, Tessa Graves just can’t seem to follow the rules. And that’s why 300 bloodthirsty wolf shifters are hot on her trail.

Not great Not awful
Revisado: 10-09-24
The series was sold as being for Pratchett fans because of the humor. The humor is a lot broader than Pratchett, and I didn't really enjoy it.
The writing and plotting were done with skill.
The narration was subpar but not bad enough to be really bad.
This is a lesson not to buy the second book in a series before completing the first.

Good performances
Revisado: 10-05-24
The reading and acting were good.
The Shadow just seems along for the ride some of the time.
Czarists being shown as the villains at a time when Stalin was murdering people in the millions is a little hard to take.
I realize the New York Times was busy getting all its information about the regime from a paid Soviet agent (Walter Duranty. Google it.), and everyone else was following its editorial line at the time. It's not fair to be annoyed with the author for things unknown by most people.

Historia
From blanket fairs to night kings, curfews to crime, At Day's Close is an intriguing and captivating investigation into the night. Until now, this rich and complex universe in which we spend nearly half of our lives was a world long-lost to historians. Here, Ekirch explores how the night was lived in the past, through travel accounts, memoirs, letters, folklore, poems, court records and coroner's reports. More than this, it is a passionate argument in the case for less artificial light in an increasingly bright world.

After bottoming out, being institutionalized, and getting sober all by the tender age of fifteen, Moshe Kasher found himself asking: “What’s next?” Over the ensuing decades, he discovered the answer: a lot. There was his time as a boy-king of Alcoholics Anonymous, a kind of pubescent proselytizer for other teens getting and staying sober. He was a rave promoter turned DJ turned sober ecstasy dealer in San Francisco’s techno warehouse party scene of the 1990s.

I got this out of an interest in ASL. It was interesting to see it from the inside looking out. (I could have lived without the descriptions of how loud his mother farted and masturbated.)
His descriptions of the ultra-Orthodox world were also interesting.
He's an interesting and smart fellow generally, but he did feel the need to snipe at anyone right of center too often.

The London Silver Vaults—for well over a century, the largest collection of silver for sale in the world. It has more locks than the Bank of England and more cameras than a paparazzi convention. Not somewhere you can murder someone and vanish without a trace—only that’s what happened. The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light, and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit.

Peter Grant remains hugely likable
Revisado: 11-14-23
However, he has certainly become domesticated.
There were not nearly as many Python references as advertised.
The reader remains excellent.
The setup has run out of interest for me, and the remake of it at the end is not something I want to follow.
