A beautiful story
Revisado: 12-25-24
I’m an avid horror reader, but every now and then one of my fav authors will remind me how important it is to wander outside of that genre. McCammon wrote something truly memorable with this story, and as I listened to it on Christmas Day, it really hit the spot.

Historia
Andrew Larimer has left his past behind. Rising up the ranks in a New York law firm, and with a heavily pregnant wife, he is settling into a new life far from Kingsport, the town in which he grew up. But when he receives a late-night phone call from an old friend, he has no choice but to return home.

Historia
Five years ago, ordinary Americans fell under the grip of a strange new malady that caused them to sleepwalk across the country to a destination only they knew. They were followed on their quest by the shepherds: friends and family who gave up everything to protect them. Their secret destination: Ouray, a small town in Colorado that would become one of the last outposts of civilization. Because the sleepwalking epidemic was only the first in a chain of events that led to the end of the world—and the birth of a new one.

A powerful, worthy follow up to Wanderers
Revisado: 12-18-24
I had enjoyed a few books by Wendig prior to starting into the Wanderers/Wayward world, but this was truly an incredible story with an amazing cast or characters. Bravo, Chuck. What an epic journey.

Shana wakes up one morning to discover her little sister in the grip of a strange malady. She appears to be sleepwalking. She cannot talk and cannot be woken up. And she is heading with inexorable determination to a destination that only she knows. But Shana and her sister are not alone. Soon, they are joined by a flock of sleepwalkers from across America, on the same mysterious journey. And like Shana, there are other "shepherds" who follow the flock to protect their friends and family on the long dark road ahead.

A glorious epic by Wendig
Revisado: 11-21-24
While there were a number of times during this novel that I thought to myself, “This reminds me of this other novel/video game/tv show, etc.”, I still felt Wendig did a masterful job of not only making those elements his own, but at giving a self aware, sometimes entirely transparent nod to those influences. Despite its length, I finished this one pretty quickly. Kudos to the narrators for their excellent work.

Not really my thing
Revisado: 11-08-24
I thought this was good for what it is, but what it is just isn’t for me. Explicit and graphic violence. A whole lot of r@pe and SA. There WAS a supernatural angle that was barely explored and I would’ve enjoyed a great deal more of that. Didn’t hate it, but not a fan of the genre so this may be a hit for folks who lean toward this variety of horror.

That’s what the tour guide promises Dr. Linda Farmer and her family when they move to Plymouth Valley. Sure, the locals are privileged hot house flowers who observe a weird religion Hollow, but the schools are blue ribbon, the air’s clean, the food’s fantastic, and Linda’s out of options. It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

And from those trees grows a new sort of apple: strange, beautiful, with skin so red it’s nearly black. Take a bite of one of these apples, and you will desire only to devour another. And another. You will become stronger. More vital. More yourself, you will believe. But then your appetite for the apples and their peculiar gifts will keep growing—and become darker.

A genuinely unique sort of nightmare
Revisado: 08-24-24
A close friend and fellow Constant Reader had recommended Wendig to me earlier this year. I started with Book of Accidents. While I found BOA to be somewhat familiar, perhaps even a bit derivative of a handful of Stephen King stories, i did genuinely enjoy it. That being said, I found BRO to be decisively different and a deeply enjoyable story that set itself apart from King, and from other notable genre authors. I am very excited to read further, and to see what other stories Wendig has to tell.

Historia
Welcome to Maple Street, a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly changing world. But menace skulks among this exclusive enclave. When the Wilde family arrive, they trigger their neighbors’ worst fears. Dad Arlo’s a gruff has-been rock star with track marks. Mom Gertie’s got a thick Brooklyn accent, with high heels and tube tops to match. Their weird kids cuss like sailors. They don’t fit with the way Maple Street sees itself.

A bleak and harrowing commentary
Revisado: 08-05-24
Langan stuns with this brooding story of paranoia, classism, and familial trauma, but that’s just scratching the surface of everything this story has to offer. I didn’t know what to expect when I went into this novel, and had given it a shot based solely on the recommendation of a fellow reader. I was blown away. I will most definitely be seeking out and taking in all that Langan has to offer.
