I really enjoyed the character growth in this book. The story was complex and rewarding with some of the humorous scenes I really enjoy. no outtakes, which is a bummer

holy plot lines, Batman!

i really love this universe. That said, there are so many different things going on, the separate plot lines are staggered, where a grip of short stories -- or for that matter, novels-- would have improved readability, i would have rather had a full story arc fleshed and brought to its conclusion than the forced turn order provided.

I'm enjoying the trilogy. it is very optimistic, which I really enjoy. it stands apart from most modern sci Fi in that regard. looking forward to seeing where the story goes!

ok, one issue, there's about 30 ships and characters that are referenced and it can be hard to track them. fortunately a bunch of the unimportant ships got Generic Name # treatment, but tracking them is a bit brutal

didn't grab me

I'm used to RC Bray's narration in this series, so I really had some trouble with things that were pronounced differently. story wasn't as gripping as the main series and I felt like I couldn't care about the characters. I bought the whole series on sale and I don't know if I will read the rest. at least I didn't waste a credit on it, it was worth what I paid for it

Filling out the characters

this book spent a lot of time developing the characters. Lowell is adding a lot to the universe and I hope he continues to flesh it out. I particularly enjoy the idea of an instructional designer shipping out with them and sort of expected him to start taking shifts.
If you are a fan of this series, you will probably enjoy this one as well

is Craig on a diet?

it felt like 1/3 of the book was talking about food. dog was hungry, people were hungry, no benefit to plot, other than a couple scenes that should have been added. lots of whining about not knowing what to do and then just happening to do the right thing. I read a few reviews and decided not to waste a credit, but I was willing to pay $6 because I generally enjoy his writing. this could have been a better short story, only losing a little bit of valuable storyline.

I'll probably buy the next book but I don't expect much

very "race war"

the characters and situations seemed contrived. Knox was unbelievable as a leader, he didn't communicate, why would anyone roll up to the gate without stopping and sending someone to parlay. early on, he asks for hostages from another faction, when if he should have requested ambassadors . spending the gas to drive an Abrams across the country is ridiculous, when they are without supply chain. I really appreciated the first 4 books because they told a story and set up an interesting world. I had trouble suspending disbelief on this one. It felt like the author had a morality tail he wanted to tell at all costs.

that said RC Bray is the man.
