Black Women reading scifi YES please
Revisado: 10-21-23
I actually liked this one even more than the first book of which it has a few surprise guests but not enough to take away from it as a stand alone. Really enjoyed the voice actres/actress that I was excited to recognize. I only wish there was a little bit more continuity with singers voice but that’s not even a factor. Loved this

First of all, I was thrown by the voice actor who grew on me and now I can’t hear it any other way. I did wish the voice actor would give a bit more range but that’s my only gripe, sold me the whole dang story so I loved it by the end.
Great story, lacks in prose, lacks in selling just how Alien the aliens are but also even their similarities. I felt like we needed more twists and turns with that but I also didn’t dislike it either. I’m excited for the sequel and I’m excited to see Solace and Idris and how their relationship pans out. Great scifi, worth the read. It definitely starts out slow

Behind its walls, the Convent of Sweet Mercy has trained young girls to hone their skills for centuries. In Mystic Class, Novice Nona Grey has begun to learn the secrets of the universe. But so often even the deepest truths just make our choices harder. Before she leaves the convent, Nona must choose which order to dedicate herself to - and whether her path will lead to a life of prayer and service or one of the blade and the fist. All that stands between her and these choices are the pride of a thwarted assassin, the designs of a would-be empress wielding the Inquisition like a knife, and the vengeance of the empire's richest lord.

I loved the progression. Regol seems like a throw away male character coming to be a slight love interest that no one asked for..... if I have a gripe, that’s my only gripe. Every time I listen to a story out of this series, it’s a genuine pleasure. More please!!

Let it grow on you/worth its
Revisado: 06-24-19
It was a slow start. I’m not used to hearing any of these accents. The actress did a wonderful job and now, I can’t associate it with anything else. I’ll probably have a hard time reading the physical edition without wanting to hear O’Neill. The story is unique. Mark Lawrence manages to subvert a lot of the usual tropes. None of the women hating other women because..... just because. You have chosen friendships, chosen family, a story that feels like it’s blending fantasy with systems that are fully well written and unique. .... I wanted lesbian Nuns and it’s there. Not a romance based story but it’s there without squinting. I still can’t tell if we’re talking about space ship engines or random orbs of power and I love it.
Not to harp on and end up spoiling things, you’ll enjoy this. It starts painfully because Nona’s beginning is one of pain. For me it’s always a rough opening and then the story is too good to ignore.
This is the kind of writing I’ve been waiting for women to write about other women...

Keep with it
Revisado: 05-02-19
I honestly hated the first two books. First because the writer didn’t know who her characters were. I scrapped along from book one to two. None of them were likable. BUT I’m a firm believer that you have to get to the entire thing as opposed to a few. ( keep with it, book 3 is a game changer for the series )
The other issue is that I felt like the voice actress just sounded snobby while playing every character. Every character starts with this egotistical tone. by book 3 .... sorry I know it’s book , you get used to it and her tone is more nuanced. I feel like if you’re not yet sold. Keep going. Now as I buy each Audio book, I look forward to hearing her more. give it a try.

I enjoyed this, even the parts where I didn’t like Jude and felt she was unjustified. Caitlin sells it. Holly did that. I’m still mad at Taryn. And even as I felt like Jude wasn’t justified towards the end, I was shook because they didn’t have to do her like that. ( you’ll find out if you haven’t listened )But as we know, revenge is so sweet . Also... I have until 2020 to get my hands on the next Audio/book? That’s real torture because I love this story. The writing is next level.
