Historia
At the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, dramatized by the popular film Black Hawk Down, the majority of soldiers who died were killed instantly or bled to death before they could reach an operating table. This tragedy reinforced the need for a revolutionary treatment that could transform trauma medicine. So, when Frank Hursey and Bart Gullong—who had no medical or military experience—discovered that a cheap, crushed rock called zeolite had blood‑clotting properties, they brought it to the military's attention. The Marines and the Navy adopted the resulting product, QuikClot, immediately.

I’m a paramedic and teach bleeding control to responders and the general public so I was quite interested in this topic. I expected to learn a little but didn’t expect to be so thoroughly captivated! Very informative and very entertaining. A must for anyone in the medical field

Historia
It was heaven on earth—and, some whispered, the devil’s garden. Thousands came by trains and carriages to see this new Eden, carved from hundreds of acres of wild woodland. They marveled at orchards bursting with fruit, thick herds of Ayrshire cattle and Cotswold sheep, and whizzing mills. They gaped at the people who lived in this place—especially the women, with their queer cropped hair and shamelessly short skirts. The men and women of this strange outpost worked and slept together—without sin, they claimed.

The Old Testament - written in ancient Israel by many different authors over the course of a thousand years - has had more meaning to more people than any other book the world has known. In a series of 24 lively lectures, Professor Levine explores selected passages from the texts known as the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, and the Tanakh, revealing how fresh research and findings from scholars of archaeology, cross-cultural studies, and comparative religion can deepen your understanding.

I generally love all the Great Courses I’ve listened to, but I have to say this was one of the best. The speaker was engaging, very knowledgeable, and lectures woven together nicely. I was only sad there wasn’t more!

Historia
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the continent of Africa was a hotbed of international trade, colonialism, and political gamesmanship. So when World War I broke out, the European powers were forced to contend with each other not just in the bloody trenches - but in the treacherous jungle. And it was in that unforgiving land that General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck would make history.

Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

Historia
During World War II, in the middle of building an atomic bomb, the leaders of the Manhattan Project were alarmed to learn that Nazi Germany was far outpacing the Allies in nuclear weapons research; Hitler, with just a few pounds of uranium, would have the capability to reverse the entire D-Day operation and conquer Europe. So they assembled a rough and motley crew of geniuses—dubbed the Alsos Mission—and sent them careening into Axis territory to spy on, sabotage, and even assassinate members of Nazi Germany's feared Uranium Club.

Interesting summaries but…
Revisado: 06-03-23
Interesting, concise summaries that made me want to read more about the individuals. Biggest flaw is that narrator! I refuse to believe that was a real person and not a text-to-speech program. Cadence was painful to follow, no emotions, way too slow, had to listen to it at 2x the speed to keep my sanity. Frequently the “reader” would repeat the same lines. If there’s a print version, get that and save yourself the aggravation

In these 10 eye-opening lectures by a practicing doctor and medical educator, you’ll walk through a series of medical mystery cases ripped from history and involving well-known historical figures whose identities are nevertheless hidden from you. Every one of these cases requires you to use your detective skills to identify and diagnose the mystery patient just like the doctors that attended them. In the process, you’ll learn fascinating insights into medicine: both the medicine that was practiced thousands of years ago and the medicine doctors practice today.

Every year, millions of Americans are overcharged and underserved while the health-care industry makes record profits. We know something is wrong, but the layers of bureaucracy designed to discourage complaints make pushing back seem impossible. Never Pay the First Bill is the guerilla guide to health care the American people and employers need. Drawing on 15 years of investigating the health-care industry, reporter Marshall Allen shows how companies and individuals have managed to force medical providers to play fair and shows how you can, too.

If ever there was a book every American should read, this is it!
Revisado: 05-21-22
“Shocked” is the best way to describe how I felt listening to this. As a healthcare provider I’m shocked how we are cheating patients; as a patient I’m shocked how much I’m being cheated. You always hear how twisted the healthcare system can be, but finally there are easy to understand steps to take thanks to this book! It really should be required reading for anyone in the US. I found it so insightful I couldn’t stop excitedly reciting facts to my wife (I’m sure it drove her nuts) and I had to purchase the hardcover so I can take notes. Oddly, I’m now looking forward to my next medical bill so I can put some of these tips into practice.
Thank you for writing this!

What makes the Civil War so fascinating is that it presents an endless number of "what if" scenarios - moments when the outcome of the war (and therefore world history) hinged on a single small mistake or omission. In this audiobook, Civil War historian Edward Bonekemper highlights the 10 biggest Civil War blunders, focusing in on intimate moments of military indecision and inaction involving great generals like Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and William T. Sherman as well as less effective generals such as George B. McClellan and Benjamin Butler.

Great review of major blunders
Revisado: 02-12-22
Some of these I was aware of, but more of the strategic blunders were interesting to learn about. Not too heavy on detail that could bore you, instead moves quickly through the case studies. Narrator was a little too dramatic for my taste but that might be my only minor complaint. Great job overall.
