I enjoyed the story immensely. It was relatable in many ways despite our differences which is fine since I read memoirs to get the perspectives of people with whom I don't share certain identities. In this case, it was nationality and socioeconomic status. There are levels to being considered working class. Where I was a bit thrown was his seemingly forced colloquial storytelling. I'm all for keeping it real with how one communicates. In his case, however, it felt like he was trying to sound "street" since he grew up in the hood. When he says stuff like, I "gave him his mad props" it's cringe (for me) as it feels like he's trying to sound and be relatable. On its own, it's a dope story but I found myself being distracted at times by his attempt to sound the part of the story he was telling.

Good nuggets in here but the author never specifies what he means by "American culture." Defining that early on would have made for a better book.
