It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

It was like listening to a video game. Not much depth. A lot of “devices” meaning it had thought put into it. But didn’t read like a true novel.

Shades of Joe A.
Revisado: 07-05-24
It may have been the narrative aspect that called out to me. The narrator is terrific. Even if he’s using British Isles accents to Aegean and Mediterranean characters. I don’t care. He does a really good job. Writing was solid. I don’t know history well enough to vouch for the accuracy. But it jibed with what I do know. The writing was very similar to Joe Abercrombie. So much so I’m a wee suspicious. But I don’t care about that either. Because I really him too. All and all. If you like rousing stories. Lots of well written gritty battle and war. I mean what’s not to like right?
It was just pretty fun. And easy to follow. Not too bogged down with details that it detracts from the story.
Fans if Steven Pacey or Joe A will get onboard with this without much problem.

If you like Joe Abercrombie. Then this book is for you. Thoroughly enjoyed it. If it’s actually a different writer. And not a “pen name” then bravo for the effort. Original in its story. But the chops of one of my favorites. Well thought out. Characters rich. World similar but different. I don’t care what the authors name is. Or who he is for that matter. Just get the rest of the series completed and published. Can’t wait.
One of the better audiobooks I’ve listed to. A special thanks to Steven Pacey. He is extremely good. I really like his ability to make it very real in front of you. The synergy between the author/story and Paceys knack for making the characters feel real. It’s almost not even like “hearing” it. But more like experiencing it. My guess is anybody who likes the style of writing JA or Steve Wall seems to channel. They will love this book as well, maybe better than any of the Abercrombies first law series books. We’ll almost ;-)

The writing, the narration
Revisado: 12-31-23
Well shite, one book less I have in front me by this guy. I really like his stories. Dismal, but humorous often as well. And Pacey I think has a large part, no a huge part I think, in why I’ve enjoyed these books so far.
I heard it once compared to game of thrones. Not even. Don’t get me wrong I loved those books too. And they’re both of the same fantasy style. But the humor in Abercrombie’s writing makes you enjoy them without wanting to get drunk after. There were times during GOT that I was literally depressed, no redemption anywhere for anything.
Another word about Pacey. One guy reviewed him as horrible - because he didn’t like the way “albino” was pronounced. And took great pains to character assassinate him as illiterate. What a joke. Pacey has more characters than Sybil running around in that head of his. Quite fun most is my point. The un-American dialects of English language pronunciations not withstanding.
Ok all that’s my 02c That’s said if you enjoy lots of action, while having fun that isn’t cliche or slapstick,, I’d say he’s self effacing but he’s not writing about himself, of the characters while also portraying in deadly earnest their power and strength or weaknesses etc. Adventure not requiring too much thought, yet very intelligent, enough to make it feel real. Then give it a try. But I’d suggest going to the First Law series book 1 otherwise you’d not get it early enough and would miss too much to truly enjoy it. Still it’d be good. But that’s only because you didn’t know what you missed. Give it a whirl.

Good stories
Revisado: 11-16-23
What can I say. I like this writer and the narrator. The stories are very good. Can be taken as stand alone (most) or to someone familiar to the series(s)as welcome backfill or return to a fantasy world that allows, (well, if you like blood, guts, betrayal, and just generally dismal outcomes for the characters in the stories ;) It’s just fun. But I may be little grim myself.
To sum it up. Anybody familiar with the writer and the narrator and enjoyed the other books in this series will find this as very enjoyable. And unlike many short story collections, this one was consistently really good and a good quantity of works to be read. You won’t feel shortchanged as it’s easily as full as any of the other full length novels by this writer. I never give five stars, except for the game of thrones and the master and commander series, (British navy napoleon era- different genre,) but for these books I do. Just entertaining, immersible allowing an escape for awhile from a sometimes mundane world of today.

Historia
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

Simply the most fun you can have if you like this sort of story.
Revisado: 11-13-23
Been hooked on this author since the first book of the series. The Half a King series I read rather than listened to. And will mourn when I’ve gone through them all. Initially I didn’t care for the narrator while listening to the first book of the first law trilogy. Now I think he’s by far the best narrator out there. So much so, I think his mastery of setting the tenor of the individual characters has a great deal to do with my elevating my opinion from just loving the story’s to feeling let down when listening to other books by other authors and narrators.
I don’t give praise easy. But I think in this case I haven’t been able to fully express my gratitude for a job(s) well done.

They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

I’d be devaluing a rating system. It’s a fun listen. I’ve been listening to the galaxy edge series since I started with Audible.
So it’s good enough that I keep going back to it. There’s so many fantastic Sci Fi stories that if I said the story is a 5 then what about the rest. 6? 7? See my point?
Worth Listening, it’s fun.
