Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. It was a wonderful story, which the author told well. It was ruined by sub-par narration.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I have to go with the principal. Everything got dumped on him, one disaster after another, one tragedy after another, and he carried on like a professional.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator has two basic voices. One is a "Cali surfer dude" and the other is a "prissy flaming queen". That's it. He doesn't even try to make characters stay consistent. Whoever is the focus of that scene gets the queen, while the other(s) get the surfer dude. Even if they were the queen just a minute earlier. I only managed to get through it by imagining Xandir from Drawn Together was doing the narration. If the narrator had even the slightest actual range, I would have enjoyed it more. Unfortunately, that's just not the case.

Was Foxe Tail worth the listening time?

No.

Any additional comments?

I loved the *story* but loathed the narration. I understand there are at least five more books in the series. I am very interested in the characters and continuing their story, so I'll be buying the ebook version.

Would you consider the audio edition of Lucky Starflowers to be better than the print version?

MUCH better. The performer raised an average story to a much higher level of enjoyment through his narration.

If you’ve listened to books by Kate Pavelle before, how does this one compare?

This was my first experience with this author.

What does Kevin Chandler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It sounds like I'm listening to a full cast presentation. He has a gift for voices. Even those minor characters are given unique voices, which he then returns to when they pop in later on. It's like he has compiled a list of every character in the book, and developed a vocal pattern for each one individually. I don't know if that's how it happened, but that's how it came across. He should be doing voice over work for cartoons (maybe he already is?).

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oh, yes. One scene in particular. I'm going to be vague, so I don't spoil things here. There is a house that has been converted into several apartments. One of those apartments has been unused since the lady who lived there passed away. Someone comes by for an unexpected visit and ends up staying in that vacant room. He just about gets to sleep when he hears squeeking, and something crawls over his feet. I was cringing/laughing so hard I had to pull over.

Any additional comments?

I didn't enjoy the story. I enjoyed the telling of the story, the performance. I'm sure it has to do with the two main characters, neither of whom I cared for or about. As a reader, I was never given the slightest reason as to why I should care for them. Side characters were much more interesting, and I kept wanting to hear more about them.

What made the experience of listening to Second Hand the most enjoyable?

I didn't know what I was in for when I popped this in. I guess, based on the cover and blurb, I expected that it would be an ordinary, run-of-the-mill story about two guys falling for each other. That's not what I got, at all. It is a comedic delight. There were so many laugh-out-loud moments peppered through this movie, I swear I must have lost five pounds just from laughing so hard. It's such an enjoyable, refreshing, delightful story, that I just can't get the story and characters out of my head.

What other book might you compare Second Hand to and why?

I have no idea. Most of the M/M books I've read or listened to are paranormal romance, science fiction, or straight up drama. This was a comedy, unlike any I've read or heard so far.

Have you listened to any of Iggy Toma’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was the first one I'd heard from this performer, though he sounds very familiar. The first half-hour or so, I thought this was the same person who did the Camp Half Blood/Percy Jackson books.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. If I described it, I'd be spoiling it and that's just wrong. So I'll hint and say it involves a cell phone and ring combination.

Any additional comments?

I see this is part of a series. I don't know if they focus on the same characters, but if they do, then they are a must-buy.
