A perfect telling
Revisado: 11-30-23
This is one of the greatest tellings of any “story” I’ve ever read. If you want a cogent non-forced narrative that is so subtle you’ll wonder how any else writes non-fiction, this is your book.

Worth it, but not great
Revisado: 06-10-21
This is a good book if you follow Meb or are a weekend warrior into pro running.
It’s probably longer than needed, and the writing isn’t super compelling, but it’s a good diary of his life combined with a few corny bits.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

Historia
Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing."

Pappe; history; and his goal
Revisado: 06-04-21
Pappe’s book would be done if it were only the first two thirds, which documents his thesis.
That he glosses over many events and omits others is besides the point, because he does a good job documenting specific events and how it created the ethnic cleansing he describes.
But that ain’t enough for Pappe.
He spends a bizarre amount of time on the JNF, the Israeli mindset, and other topics.
Pappe is clearly upset at nearly every aspect of Israel, and it comes through, unlike, say, Raja Shehada, who describe crimes in an almost detached way.
Pappe is a polemicist and wants to be seen as such.
Oh, and he cites Wikipedia in the beginning, which is a trash way to start (or finish) a book.
It’s still worth a read.

Historia
Every major decision governing our diverse, majority-female, and increasingly liberal country bears the stamp of the US Senate, yet the Senate allows an almost exclusively White, predominantly male, and radically conservative minority of the American electorate to impose its will on the rest of us. How did we get to this point? In Kill Switch, Adam Jentleson argues that shifting demographics alone cannot explain how Mitch McConnell harnessed the Senate and turned it into a powerful weapon of minority rule.

Not boring, but not exciting
Revisado: 05-23-21
As a political animal, I thought I’d love the book. While it does a good job describing the history of the filibuster and the consequences of it, it’s not a very exciting book or an incredible read. I’d recommend it almost for reference, but it’s not “fun” or riveting.

Historia
In what has become a classic of Middle Eastern literature, Raja Shehadeh, in Palestinian Walks, wrote of his treks through the hills surrounding Ramallah over a period of three decades under Israel's military occupation. In Where the Line Is Drawn, Shehadeh explores how occupation has affected him personally, chronicling the various crossings that he undertook into Israel over a period of forty years to visit friends and family, to enjoy the sea, to argue before the Israeli courts, and to negotiate failed peace agreements.

Revisado: 02-01-21
Unlike the various Westerners who don’t speak Arabic (or Hebrew), or who are also lazy polemicists, Shehadeh speaks clearly and emotionally about human rights and how HUMANS are just as important as the “rights” segment of that phrase. You should read it.
