A wonderful narration of an excellent, important, valuable book. One of my favorite listens of all my many decades to listening to books “on tape,” which I’ll never stop saying.

This book is a whole series of tidbits about life in Victorian London and, in that regard, totally delivers on the promise of its title. But beyond that, there isn’t much depth in terms of scholarship or analysis. It’s entertaining, though, and Anton Lesser is enjoyable as a narrator.

I loved absolutely every moment of this. I wish it were even longer! Sachs does an excellent job bringing a delightful and entertaining story to life.

If only Miles didn’t have such weird intonation!

It was splendid aside from the fact that the voice Thompson uses for Miles is absolutely unbearable. I know that he himself is supposed to be a bit unbearable but goodness gracious...

Loved it otherwise!

I’d listen to David Collings read the phone book. If not for him, I’d never have I found this absolutely delightful story. I’m so glad I did!

I’m a Dr. Who novice (this was my first) so I don’t know how this compares to other Dr. Who stories. All I know is that I loved it.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Return of the Native to be better than the print version?

I would. I love Patrick Tull's voice, and for some reason the density of Hardy translates really well to audio (especially with such a gifted narrator). I think I appreciate Hardy's long descriptions of setting much more than I would when reading, given that our modern tastes are a little more sparing.

What did you like best about this story?

The forehead slapping decisions of the two sets of couples. And when the young boy is gambling.

Have you listened to any of Patrick Tull’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to his version of Dickens' Hard Times, which is why I bought this edition. I love, love, love his voice. He has such skill with women, especially. Dickens has a wider variety of characters than Hardy, so Dickens was, in that respect, more fun. But man oh man, when Eustacia is lamenting her scourging, I really felt like I was listening to *her* and not Tull at all.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the Reddleman wins back the guineas. And when Eustacia hears the "frog" on the second 5th of November.

Any additional comments?

I think that classics like this one are really done a wonderful service with such careful and artful narration. Even as a literature lover, I simply don't have the time to sit down and really immerse myself in a book like this, but when I enjoy it this way, I get to savor it while doing all sorts of other things.

What did you love best about The Darker Side of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Volume 2?

What can I say. Fantastic. Such wonderful narration, so fun to hear a little Conan Doyle outside the normal Sherlock territory.

What other book might you compare The Darker Side of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Volume 2 to and why?

There are some Gothic Tales of Horror compilations, and one about Classic Crime Short Stories that are rather in the same vein. Creepy, great, fun.

What does Phil Reynolds bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Fantastic accents.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Oh gosh, when Douglas Stone realizes what he's done in "The Case of Lady Sannox"! Come ON! Worth every penny!

What made the experience of listening to The Crocodile Bird the most enjoyable?

I loved this. I have read and listened to a great deal of Rendell, and this one struck me as special, due in no small part to the 1st person flashback perspective. Jill Tanner is terrific; I am not always keen on female narrators, but she has the perfect voice for this narrative.

What did you like best about this story?

The feeling that it gave me.

Which scene was your favorite?

The one with the dogs.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! But it was too long to do so!

What made the experience of listening to The Rottweiler the most enjoyable?

The narrator and the story. Both were absolutely wonderful. It's Ruth Rendell in her "crazy intertwined neighborhood" mode.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes! As Alexander Gibbons sorted things out, things definitely got more and more interesting. And the twist with the strong box and the perfume counter were genius.

Which character – as performed by Nigel Anthony – was your favorite?

Freddy Perfect and Suzanne/Zenab's mother. Freddy Perfect was absolutely amazing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"What do you know about your upstairs neighbor?"

Any additional comments?

I'm an unabashed Rendell fan, so I give this 5 stars all around.
