Even years later, and after several rereads, it's still in a class of its own. It advanced and popularized a self-critical scientific approach to interpreting history. It told the human story with the combination of breadth, depth, integrity and urgency that are the hallmarks of Diamond's thought and writing. 20 years after my first read, I'm grateful once more to have read it.

A thrilling story that somehow manages to balance personal and cosmic, deep history and immediate experience, clever scientific speculation with a vivid emotional backdrop. It works, and it leaves you wanting more.

Long and comprehensive, but somehow never stops being interesting. It's a survey of the fundamental concepts that drive the study of language, but at no point does McWhorter forget to link a particular insight or example to the broader human experience it represents. The result is a window into maybe the most basic and defining human activity, from an expert who seems to love the act of teaching as much as he loves his fascinating and challenging subject. I loved it more than I ever expected to.

A look at linguistic "archeology" and what it can unearth about the origins of our civilizations. If nothing else, I came away impressed at how little we know of the deep roots of human cultures and societies. A fascinating journey.

An illuminating survey of the history and mechanics of writing. Spans millennia and continents but nevertheless offers enough detail and real-world examples to make the broader analysis accessible. You'll be surprised at how much you didn't know about writing, and how much of what you knew was wrong.

Written in sweeping, thoughtful prose. It's not just a history of America, but of the interaction between America and the world in which it developed in each generation. The reader is a bit boring. A less formal and more relaxed voice would read better, in my view.
