Historia
Sami Kierce, a young college grad backpacking in Spain with friends, wakes up one morning, covered in blood. There’s a knife in his hand. Beside him, the body of his girlfriend. Anna. Dead. He doesn’t know what happened. His screams drown out his thoughts—and then he runs. Twenty-two years later, Kierce, now a private investigator, is a new father who’s working off his debts by doing low level surveillance jobs and teaching wannabe sleuths at a night school in New York City. One evening, he recognizes a familiar face at the back of the classroom. Anna.

Good.. but
Revisado: 04-02-25
The good... The story is fun, the iconic Coben twists and turns are in full effect, the wild story seemingly happening to the average Joe, it's there and well done.
The not as good.. It felt like Mr. Coben was writing for a screenplay not a book. Like he was writing it with the thought in mind that this will be the next one of his on Netflix.
The pretty close to bad... the narrator was not for me. Their female voices were bad. I've read other reviews saying the females all ran together, I think in part, at least for me, this was because of the voice performance. Anytime there was "action" the voice acting was bad. Anytime there wasn't "action" it was meh at best. It almost made me miss the over acting of Scott Brick on some of Coben's previous offerings.
Side note of meh: The lead's Pakistani heritage only pops up at random moments, it has so little to do with who the character is as a person it feels almost like a token at times. Though -- silver lining thank whomever directed the audiobook, they didn't allow the reader to try an accent, of any kind. Jersey, Pakistani or otherwise.
I've read all of Coben's books, I will likely read the next (and the next), I hope they reassess the voice for the next one.

Historia
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Could have been better, narration is horrible
Revisado: 09-09-24
This is one of the very few that I stopped listening and went to read the book without listening. The story is compelling, the co-pendent dynamic is telling. The narration is horrible. It made it unlistenable for me. Skip the audible on this one and pick up the book.

Great story, almost unbearable narration.
Revisado: 12-11-23
Please, as a long time Coben fan, I beg of you, Please re-record this with another female narrator. I loved Angela Dawe's work on Fantasticland. Her work on this makes it unlistenable. I blind purchased this because I'm in the process of buying all of Coben's books in audio form, and therefore did not read the reviews until after listening to a few chapters and wondering if I was alone in thinking it was as bad as it is. The only thing worse than the lilt at the end of EVERY sentence, is her attempt at a southern accent. This is the first Coben Audiobook I cannot finish, which is a shame, Just One Look is a great story!

ridiculous
Revisado: 07-26-23
the only saving grace were the moments January LaVoy was reading. the male narration was awful, but not nearly as bad as what this story devolved into. the only thing missing was him ripping her bodice off as they both protested we shouldn't do this as each held their Bible. I am pretty sure this is the first book read by Ms LaVoy that I gave up on. though I did make it about 2/3 of the way through.

DNF - awful weak woman tropes
Revisado: 05-10-23
Strong woman that has survived so much, on the run from her past life, but melts into a pile of goo from one look at an invasive save the day guy? PUH..LEASE. The premise is excellent, the story should have been GREAT. January LaVoy is narrating. This should be a 4+ star book. But The never ending, I'm so strong, him telling her NO YOURE not let me SAVE YOU, even though she's managed to save her self and create a whole new world for herself for years. I got through chapter 19 and could not finish. Come on female authors, stop doing women like this!

Eh..
Revisado: 12-21-21
Not my cup of tea, the story has potential but it is heavy with sometimes seemingly forced religious overtones. Entire passages that have nothing to do with moving the story along, but rather just claims glory to god. Which some might enjoy, it bogged the book down for me and had me skipping ahead sometimes upwards of five minutes to get back to the story. Another small annoyance, the author falls into the bad habit of discussing the female character's "pillowy lips" and "hair that you just know smells good" and all the men can't help but look at her, getting lost in how beautiful she was. None of that silliness is bestowed on the male characters. Narrator did a good job with the material though.

Excellent retelling of The Lord of the Flies
Revisado: 06-11-21
Excellent. That in and of its self is enough. The readers as well as the source material is engrossing and well done. A modernized retelling of the lessons of The Lord of the Flies, told through a series of interviews of those that survived the incident and bookended with commentary from the "reporter"

The book follows two differing storylines, that never quite merge together aside from being in similar places at similar times.
