a story so "safe" & simple that leaves you with zero character investment.

Well, let's start from the authors prologue where you says outright that you don't have to worry, a happy ending.
Next the most interesting storyline is resolved pretty soon into the book. Guess the reader can't handle suspense. Then for a vast majority in the middle we get the internal whiny dialogue of the two main characters back and forth that rivals Bella and Jacob and Twilight.
They pine after each other, but you can see what is coming a mile away. Yawn. And this "conflict" is the result of our MFC being SO incredibly stupid, that see didn't learn the lesson in the start of assuming she knows what people think, It takes reading what the MMC wrote for her to realize that you should talk to people directly when you feel slighted that the rest of the book is a misunderstanding, that is until she again reads what he wrote about her to change her mind. Couldn't help thinking if they actually had an honest conversation in the beginning you could cut out 2/3 of this bs drama. The only thing these two have any comment is being doctors, their hang ups, and sexual attraction. And because we were told directly that they have happy endings, we know they're going to get together. The author tries to create artificial drama using the family of the main characters which was just generic and dull. in the end it's a female power fantasy with him doing all the changing to placate her past trauma. so none of them actually resolved their issues. His issue was being an introvert which made me angry as being an introvert should not be a flaw. Yes at times it's called social anxiety, but the author intertwined social anxiety with introvert so much that the reader leaves thinking that they're the same thing.
How in the world are you these two doctors?! You know author that doctors are the same people they are on and off shift right? Yes, they are professionals. But her being hot tempured and misunderstanding would leak into her care for her patients. That every time she felt overwhelmed she had to hide in a closet? Same for him?
Every twist and turn in this book is set up and conveniently discussed so you can see it coming. MCs spend the whole time fixated on their issues and listing about each other, just for the issues to be there at the end and they end up together. So the theme of the story is we all have faults but if you placate each other it'll be okay. Shocker.
And finally the chapters are maddening. The author is too lazy to actually label them and just switches between the main characters names. This make it impossible for me to refer to certain chapters for my book club which assign this piece of garbage. It felt like the author just wanted to write a story about Benny's illness. But when that is resolved in the beginning didn't know what to do.

If you are a fan of SW from the PT to the OT, READ THIS BOOK!

This story is amazing. it's told like a drama, and is a simple story of OWK which is consistent with his character, realistic, and engaging. It develops the entire cast of characters, and on top of that is OWK dealing with his own regrets, trying not to be sucked in to new ones, and sadly seeing again that he can't stop others from experiencing the consequences of their own actions.

This, Wild space, and Master/Apprentice are my favorite OWK books and I highly recommend this one in particular for the narration.

wow, that was tough. first it took me eight tries to even get through it. there's too many character setups with dead (literal) ends and multiple characters and story lines that there's hardly any time to get deep with any one of them actually care if they die. I know they want us to feel something when they kill all these characters but it was used often.
Even at the end, I hardly know who is alive and the whole point of this story.

23 hours of boring

Wow that was bland. A PG story told in a say- then-do narrative told in a monotone way with little inflection between characters.

You start with a lot of hope, As the story began. switching between brothers, I kept waiting for the conflict, the struggle to survive.

But the biggest thing to happen is the pandemic. which happens in real time separate from the one family that is completely immune. So it never felt these characters were in danger or had to struggle. By the time you get to groups who has to struggle a little, you didn't care anymore. Grief was glossed over, told later in brief past narratives which make you go, "oh, okay". And nothing else.

Without any conflict, real struggle or adversity, this book was boring. The characters didn't face any problems after the "rapture". It was ridiculoudlsy, unbelievably easy to move around, find food/resources find family without technology, meet others and merge with them, and even travel on an airplane. There were ZERO setbacks. I kept waiting for something to go wrong. Nothing did. None of the seven deadly sins. All 22 people came together perfectly and lived happily ever after. So what was the point of this 23 hours? Just to listen to these people have the perfect after rapture experience? Blah.

Finally, there was underlying currents of racisim and sexism in the characters, speach and actions, plus a real lack of knowledge about how young people speak. Really, anyone born after 1965 would not say the word "teeny-bopper". And this comes out of the mouth of a 14-year old boy repeatedly?

So overall, do not read/listen. If this was paper, I would line my cat litter box with it.

there were three flaws in this production that more relevant throughput. First is the actor playing Dooku sounds much more like Palpatine that I never got into his character. second is the author didn't do research into the Padawan selection process. Not accurate. 3rd is the cheesy Jedi dialogue which belongs more to gamblers and Bush pilots than Temple trained Jedi. overall, the story was good and there was some really good acting . but with these persistent flaws all in all, the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

Claudia Gray has become my favorite SW author of the new Canon. I've listened to this book about 15 times and still enjoy it. Her character development and story arcs are rich and she does give us great POV internal monologue and motivation to Jedi who are often depicted as wooden and dry in other works. She also does the very rare trick of getting me to care and invest just as much for other main characters in the story. Rael, Pax and Rahara are fantastic.

But at times she drops the ball when inserting typical American references that make me cringe and ruin submersion. The worst ones being Qui-Gon munching on leftovers while doing his homework and Rael referring to getting laid. On that note I don't think QGJ would just walk into Rael's bedroom, wouldn't he sense a woman in there?

Gray did change some features from previous canon, and added some new lore. Sometimes for good, other times not.
From what I remember:

1. Jedi Younglings are not taught to swim (previous many mention of the underground lake and 1000 fountains. OBK would swim frequently with his BFF Bant who is Kalimari)

2. OWK did like flying until he became afraid due to an indicent from an out of control ship. (formally he just didn't like flying, preferring to be grounded with his surroundings with an aversion to the mechanical. I like the legends version much better and felt Gray rushed and squeezed it in which didn't seem believable.

3. OWK is now Qui-Gon's only apprentice. This is directly stated when QGJ says he could only imagine the hurt that would come with losing an apprentice. (Xanatos was an important character in QGJ's history, and was the reason he was hesitant to bring on OWK as an apprentice.)

4. OWK has new friends (no mention of any of the previous friends he had. Which is a bummer because this is such a little part that could of easily canonized these characters (like Bant and Suri) we've seen in dozens of OWK books.

5. The door is wide open for QGJ's move interest . Tahl is never mentionl by name, which means a future author can insert a different love interest for him, which would be a shame and QGJ and Tahl had such a sweet and complex relationship.

One nice thing in this book is how QGJ likes to collect things and is given a momento from her. In Legends, OWK keeps a river stone given to him by QGJ to reminder him. So I thought it was a nice touch. Other lore things I enjoyed were
+OWK showing how to build a lightsaber.
+The world of Pigel and the athestic.
+Bringing in Kolan crystals which I believe explain the weapons seen in the sequels.
+QGJ's obsession with profecy.
+The role of a Padawan and what they do in everyday life.
+QGJ's invitation to the Jedi Council. Oh how the story would of been different if he excepted.
+Showing how complex a topic like slavery is and how difficult it is to stop it and a mega corporation.
+Battle meditation
+Time QGJ spent with Rael and Dooku.
