A mix of drama, thriller, and historical fiction centered on a complicated yet fierce friendship
Revisado: 01-06-25
I heard about this book in a Beach Read discussion but I would not categorize it as such, despite the poolside cover art. It had complex characters, some with questionable morals, but this author can make you understand one’s poor choices. With food and musical references to the 1960’s and 70’s I felt like I was in the Hamptons as the story unfolded. The flashbacks in this book make it an engrossing read that you can’t put down and then you need to go back and reread specific scenes. There were many excellent thoughts about friendships within the book as well.

Historia
One blustery night in 1928, a whale washes up on the shores of the English Channel. By law, it belongs to the King, but twelve-year-old orphan Cristabel Seagrave has other plans. She and the rest of the household—her sister, Flossie; her brother, Digby, long-awaited heir to Chilcombe manor; Maudie Kitcat, kitchen maid; Taras, visiting artist—build a theatre from the beast’s skeletal rib cage. Within the Whalebone Theatre, Cristabel can escape her feckless stepparents and brisk governesses, and her imagination comes to life.

I loved this book from start to finish. Favorite book of 2023. I’m so sad it’s over. I’ll continue to think of Cristabel, Flossie, Digby, Maudie, Myrtle, & Betty.
