Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Diana and Mathew's Chronicle continues
Revisado: 07-22-24
Could not stop listening and am relistening.
I had the terrific opportunity to attend Deborah Harkness' Book Signing yesterday at Anderson"s Books in Naperville, Illinois. I bought the audio book when it was released on the 16th, and was able to know the ending before the event.
Deborah Harkness is a phenomenal intelligent story teller and was very generous to her audience as she answered many interesting questions about the characters and her writing techniques.
The book flows seamlessly from the previous titles, although it is a wonderful story on its own and could be read as the first introduction to Dianna and Mathew. However, I recommend going to the beginning with the Discovery of Witches-- there is so much detail beyond the plot that would be a shame to miss.
Jennifer Ikeda, read first three books and I would have been disappointed if she her voice had not continued the story.

Finding an old manuscript in the attic has always been a fantasy of Sylvia’s. She just never expected the fantasy to come true, or for it to lead her to answers about her mysterious family.

New characters and some old all believable and likable. The story moves ahead 30 years but the magical premise consistent.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

A splendid way to learn history
Revisado: 08-31-20
Erik Larson makes history read as a novel. As I have both the audio and the hardcopy it was interesting read along with the reader, and to Google questions and persons to get a greater depth. I recall learning of WWII in history class as well as from my parents who lived it but in his telling, Mr. Larson brings to life the details, and persons which are so important in understanding the past. Mr. Larson also powerfully relates the trials of the English people, their fortitude, and how Churchill united them and kept their spirits positive with so much destruction and deprivation, In parallel he tells how some of society continues as not to ignore the war but to go on in spite the tribulations around them.
In todays confused times we long for a leaders with the intelligence, understanding, and tenacity of Churchill and Roosevelt--leaders who see their countries before themselves and recognize that history is not about them but about the people they represent. Mr. Larson provides insight into such a leader.
All of the books I read by Erik Larson show the details of history that bring a greater understanding of each particular subject.
Five star recommendation.

In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric.

A Reaformation
Revisado: 07-14-20
Mary Trump's book was waiting for me in my audio que first thing this morning. As I proceeded with my 'stay at home' routine, I carried my laptop and listened. I finished an hour ago. It is well written and flows really well. It was good to hear the story in Mary's voice.
I did not learn anything that I did not already know or suspect, however, it was a reaformation of as Rick Wilson wrote: "Everything Trump Touches Dies".-- but with an insider's view and direct knowledge.
In the early 1980's when The Donald and Ivana were making the talk show rounds my husband said in disgust "Trump is a proclaimed self made man who thinks because he has experienced a bit of success thinks he is an expert on very thing". Little did we know then. I think Trump's first book should have been titled "The Art of the Lie".
I thank the author for telling her story and hopefully the country will benefit.

Historia
In Everything Trump Touches Dies, political campaign strategist and commentator Rick Wilson brings his darkly funny humor and biting analysis to the absurdity of American politics in the age of Trump. Wilson mercilessly exposes the damage Trump has done to the country, to the Republican Party he served for decades, and to the conservative movement that has abandoned its principles for the worst president in American history. No left-winger, Wilson is a lifelong conservative who delivers his withering critique of Trump from the right.

Lessons to follow
Revisado: 09-10-18
Articulate, sarcastic and politically knowledgeable, Rick Wilson gives words of wisdom that need to be heeded by all of us-- both Democrats and Republicans. Constitution, rule of law and country first---not negative seperatest and mean spirited views that divide the United states and do not address the important and vital issues at hand. The Trump administration and followers have damaged this nation both domestically and internationally. We need to wake up and repair the damage while we can.
A must read--or as in my case listen!

So glad to have met diverse and interesting women
Revisado: 11-26-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Joy for Beginners to be better than the print version?
As I have not read it but only listened so I can not compare. Audio is wonderful at brining the the characters alive--Erica Baurmeister's books are great to listen to as they flow in a very conversational manner. I have always enjoyed being dread to.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the idea of Kate giving each of her friends a challenge after her own challenge. If I knew her, I wonder what challenge she would have given me.
Have you listened to any of Cassandra Campbell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
As always excellent --of course she reads several authors works that I enjoy--Adriana Trigiani and Jodi Picoult--to name two.
If you could take any character from Joy for Beginners out to dinner, who would it be and why?
They are all invited to my house for dinner I would like to know them and I have very good friends I would like them to know; which is why I will be recommending the book to my friends.
Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed Erica Bauermeister's previous books as well as JOY FOR BEGINNERS. She has a wonderful talent to create original well rounded interesting characters, wich put into realistic life situations with surroundings and environments that are articulately described. Her books flow well. I am amazed at the knowledge she has in so many diverse subjects in this case bread making, throwing pottery, tattoos, and the Colorado river. A very rewarding read.
