A really interesting multi-faceted look at four historical cities. I loved the anecdotes from the field, connection to recent ideas and examples, and the way the people of these cities were fleshed out and not forgotten. Definitely an engaging and well-paced exploration.

Good, but I like the Hades version more

I actually began with this story from Hades’s POV, A Game of Fate. While this version came first, and thus has more world building, I do think that Hades so far is a more complex and interesting character than Persephone, and thus his subplots are more intricate and exciting.

That said, it was fun to explore this side of the story and flesh out the world Scarlett St. Clair creates. I’ll be reading the sequels, on both sides.

I had never thought of Rumpelstiltskin as being good fodder for a retelling centered on a shy female artist, but Davidson really weaves this into a whole new story. Some loose threads and events that don’t seem to be returned to throughout, but overall an easy, enjoyable listen.

This novel reads as one that people who read a lot of literary fiction would characterize as “different” while still incorporating the characteristic melancholy, angst, and, at times, pointless that has become all the rage in the genre. There’s no question that Hobson can write, and on the surface this novel has a great premise and interesting characters. But as often happens with “coming of age“ novels, the reader is left wondering “so what?” and questioning what was gained from the reading. There were a lot of characters and episodes that were dropped in made to seem important, and then never really came back or were mentioned again; if they did, it was seemingly at random with little impetus to move the plot along.

But, this is all personal perspective. If you enjoyed Lorrie Moore’s “A Gate at the Stairs,” you’ll probably enjoy this, as I found some similarities between the protagonists and how the stories unfolded.

A great little art mystery, but because it’s a novella, it wraps up a little too quickly. Readers of Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch will really enjoy this one, as there are some related art references.

Lagos in the Style of Dickens

A motley crew of characters send their way through the obstacles and discoveries of Lagos in this sophomore novel from Chibundu Onuzo. Three men escaping their various roles in propagating the violence in the Niger Delta, a girl separated from her parents, and a woman on the run from her rich but abusive husband all come together en route to the city, where they get embroiled in politics thanks to embezzling political minister and wealthy newspaper man.

The story is fast-paced, well-narrated, and brings each character alive. While sometimes the plot feels a bit forced - and the end feels a bit unsatisfactory - the magic is in Onuzo’s ability to breathe life into each of these characters, so that we root for their success even when it all seems unrealistically out of reach.

Grabbed this on sale because I needed a break between more serious books I've been working on and I can officially say it was a gateway to the genre for me. While there are some YA tropes in here, I think this book is actually a bit closer to the "New Adult" designation with some spice and some really dark moments. Some interesting takes, too - the setting and the male lead's twist is not something I've encountered in the fantasy literature I've been reading. Listened to this on a long-haul flight and didn't sleep because I couldn't stop listening. Definitely recommend if you're a fantasy kid who is trying to figure out being a fantasy adult.

Rob Ingles’s narration is a treasure. His singing brings the songs to life and it feels like Tolkien himself is reading the book to you. Can’t wait to listen again.

A beautifully-written investigation of one woman’s search for identity and belonging. Expertly narrated with various accents and understanding of linguistic markers. My main qualm was the pacing - the book read lot started in Africa, but it took a while to get there and seemed to end rather abruptly. But definitely recommend.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an incredible storyteller, and in this she expertly portrays the Biafran War through the eyes of an assortment of characters. While heavy at times - the book is about a civil war, after all - the characters never cease to feel human even in their darkest and lowest moments. I recommend the audio to make the language come alive. Beautiful, heartbreaking, incredible book.
