A book to keep your attention
Revisado: 05-20-23
I must preface this with a confession that I am a fan of Candice Fox. But I also listen to about five audio books per month and her stories always keep me engaged with just right pacing, interesting characters, and plots that don’t give away the ending too soon. Fire With Fire did not disappoint. The contrast in age and experience between the women, the youthful Lamb and seasoned Ferboden and their contrasting response to crisis was an interesting way to present dimension in the storyline that stepped away from the typical male-female juxtaposition. The only element in this story that seemed glossed over for me was any mention of concern for maintaining the chain of custody for evidence. Seems to me the value of evidence obviously accessed by those who threatened to destroy it, destroyed or not, would be diminished. However, I was able to overlook that element of the storyline in favor of enjoying the rest.

Historia
Reading his own newspaper’s obituaries, veteran reporter Carter Ross comes across that of a woman named Nancy Marino, who was the victim of a hit-and-run while she was on the job delivering copies of that very paper, the Eagle-Examiner. Struck by the opportunity to write a heroic piece about an everyday woman killed too young, he heads to her wake to gather tributes and anecdotes. It’s the last place Ross expects to find controversy - which is exactly what happens when one of Nancy’s sisters convinces him that the accident might not have been accidental at all.

Not my preferred style.

I did not find much mystery, and found the primary character to be immature, inept, and sometimes a bit ‘campy’, like when he equates sweating after a run with an Amazonian rain forest in his pants. Sometimes the use of simile/metaphor was an awkward stretch, perhaps an attempt at humor or creativity but I found it took me out of the story. I did finish the book and it was a quick read, but I will look for a much more complex mystery and multifaceted characters next time out.

Historia
Harry Blue is the top sex crimes investigator in her department. She's a seasoned pro who's seen it all. But even she didn't see this coming: her own brother arrested for the grisly murders of three beautiful young women. Harry's been sent to a makeshift town in a desolate landscape - a world full of easy money, plenty of illegal ways to spend it, and a ragtag collection of transient characters who thrive on the fringes of society.

Entertaining

I enjoyed this story. It is an escapist read that does not require a great deal of brain power to follow and I found the pacing fine. I don't believe the main character would be tolerated in a real life law enforcement environment, but I am okay with that in a fictional context. She is uninhibited in many respects and a bit quirky. Other characters in the book were interesting, but I am not sure the motivation behind their behavior always rang true. About the performance, I especially enjoyed the narrator. Apparently others had trouble with her accent... I loved it. After struggling through other narrators that take a long breath between each sentence, I found this narrator's reading clear, well paced and expressive without being too theatrical. It fit my imagination of the primary character well. At least one storyline carries into the next book of the series, so not everything is wrapped up at the end of this one. However, enough is resolved to be satisfying.
