Historia
In the fifth century BC, a global superpower was determined to bring truth and order to what it regarded as two terrorist states. The superpower was Persia, incomparably rich in ambition, gold, and men. The terrorist states were Athens and Sparta, eccentric cities in a poor and mountainous backwater: Greece. The story of how their citizens took on the Great King of Persia, and thereby saved not only themselves, but Western civilization as well, is as heart-stopping and fateful as any episode in history.

informative
Revisado: 06-21-22
I enjoyed the perspective of the Persian story, so much is told of the history of Athens and Sparta from their vantage point. Gave me a different perspective of the mid east region, as I had only cursory history lessons about that region. I can recommend this to history dabblers like myself that couldn't get through the books from ancient historians. It gave me an appreciation of the lives and lifestyles of these ancient people. The narration was excellent, never monotonous or annoying.

Historia
The extraordinary career of George Catlett Marshall - America’s most distinguished soldier - statesman since George Washington - whose selfless leadership and moral character influenced the course of two world wars and helped define the American century. Set against the backdrop of five major conflicts - two world wars, Palestine, Korea, and the Cold War - Marshall's education in military, diplomatic, and political power, replete with their nuances and ambiguities, runs parallel with America's emergence as a global superpower.

interesting, but I didn't get insight into the man
Revisado: 12-24-20
Marshall is an informative book, but the writer seems to be unable to convey a passion for his subject. I didn't really feel any warmth for Marshall, the man. May partly be the fault of the narrator, who at times put me to sleep with his delivery. Additionally, at times, the author would interject what he thought Marshall was thinking about key meetings, instead of actually documented Marshall thoughts. I have read many biographies and I found this writer's continual insertion of his opinions odd. And at times a derisive tone employed by the narrator was odd too, especially as I learned Marshall was a skilled diplomat and politician. Marshall, according to the author's text, never seemed to be derisive towards anyone. I would have preferred a different author, but would highly recommend reading about Marshall.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

fascinating
Revisado: 04-06-20
I had never read a bio of Grant. I got the audible version. It is an extensive bio. I knew about Grant from civil war books and bios on Lincoln and Sherman, etc. and high school history class. I feel the author tried to capture the truth of Grant, the good and the bad. The narrator was good, it was never monotonous. I always prefer historians who put the bio subject in context of the era they lived. I found it interesting, that like today, newspapers had political agendas as politicians do. This book, as others histories, like 'The Impending Crisis' emphasizes to me that politicians and news reporters and editors are the same then as today. As we all are, and we express our opinions. I was most surprised by the author's theme of Grant's honesty. And how much as president he worked to provide former slaves opportunities after the war. His support of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments' passing and implementation was unknown to me. The author dealt extensively with the scandals during Grant's 2 terms as president. And I am always pleased to read about happy marriages. The author provides insights into his marriage and family. In summary it was a fascinating look at a great American of humble origins.

Historia
David M. Potter's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Impending Crisis is the definitive history of antebellum America. Potter's sweeping epic masterfully charts the chaotic forces that climaxed with the outbreak of the Civil War: westward expansion, the divisive issue of slavery, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown's uprising, the ascension of Abraham Lincoln, and the drama of Southern secession.

For American history devotees, this is a must read. A worthy Pulitzer winner. Should be required reading in all US history classes. Fascinating how many themes and American politicians were included in this narrative. Very ably narrated.

Historia
Improve your biblical literacy with these 24 insightful lectures about the cast of vivid characters in the New Testament. From the well-known figures of Jesus, John the Baptist, and the disciples to important but lesser known figures, such as the Syro-Phoenician woman who must turn Jesus's own words back on him to gain the healing of her daughter, Professor Levine paints vivid portraits of Christianity's founding generation. You'll learn about such figures as. the elderly couple Elizabeth and Zechariah and their son, John the Baptist;. Jesus's friends, the contemplative Mary and the vocal Martha, as well as their brother, Lazarus;. the apostles Peter and Thomas, James and John, and Judas Iscariot;. Mary Magdalene, who becomes known as the apostle to the apostles;. Paul the apostle, as presented in Acts of the Apostles and what can be determined about him from his letters;. a number of strong and interesting women, including the unnamed Samaritan and a repentant sinner who anoints Jesus; and. Jesus's interlocutors, including the centurion with a paralyzed son and the desperate Canaanite mother with a demon-possessed daughter.Rather than promoting any particular religious worldview, this course seeks to read the ancient texts anew to discover what they really say and how they were interpreted by both the secular culture and the faithful church.
