Just about everything you'd like to know (whether you knew it or not) about the troublesome and often murderous denizens of our planet (other than humans, that is), and those who are tasked with finding them out and protecting us from them.

I could never (really) even begin to imagine what surviving on the streets would be like for a runaway or homeless teen, but Chris Bohjalian has done it, and has opened my eyes and broken my heart in the telling. But the story is about so much more than that: about families and adolescent/teen rebellion, about the difficulties of being a child who refuses to fit into other's ideas of what she should be, about losing friends and making new ones, and about the need to be needed, which is part of each of us. This novel will stay with me and haunt me for a long time, and I suspect I will be revisiting it more than once.

I was also impressed by the skill with which it was read, not just the expression of Emily's thoughts and feelings, but with the diction, as well! I am a little hard of hearing, and it is such a pleasure to hear such clear and measured enunciation! I wasn't fond of hearing all the profanity and rough language, but it made the story seem even more gritty and real, so I believe it was necessary.

Thank you for a most absorbing read!

I decided to listen to Oliver Twist after missing a question about it on Jeopardy. I thought I had read it in my youth, when I first came to love Dickens, but apparently I was confusing the book with the movie Oliver!, because there are a few major differences between the two.

One of the things I love best about Dickens is the way he paints his characters, making them come to life on the page with all of their flaws and idiosyncrasies. He does that in Oliver Twist, yet I was surprised to find that The Artful Dodger and Fagin were very different characters from the jolly characters I remembered from the movie Oliver! They are much more believable, though, as are most of the cruel, heartless characters in this tale. It is a sad tale throughout much of it, but it was well worth the reading for the intricate way in which the author weaves his story, slowly pulling in each disparate element as a spider weaves its web until we at last May see, with astonishment, the completed picture.

There was only one real fly in the ointment, and that was the disturbing way in which the author repeatedly refers to Fagin as "the Jew," which suggests to me a level of abhorrence and prejudice, on Dickens' part, that I find distasteful and distressing. I wouldn't dream of censoring it; I mention it here only as a warning to others who might also be offended be it.

I was enthralled with "Fairy Tale" immediately, from the story of Charlie and his father, to Charlie's unfolding relationship with Mr. Bowditch and Radar, and throughout Charlie's adventures in the eldritch fairy tale world that comprises the main body of the story. As with most of Stephen King's stories, " Fairy Tale" requires the willful suspension of disbelief in order to enjoy what one is reading, and I was richly rewarded for it!

I would, however, caution the reader/listener that, as with much of King's work, the story is liberally sprinkled with foul language. I don't wish to be overly critical or prudish on this point but I find it difficult, when I hear foul language (or any language) thrown at me for any length of time, to keep from blurting out said language myself, when provoked, to my own shock and dismay.

This is the best narrator I have heard yet, especially for Dickens--except perhaps, for the annoying noises she threw in for Mr. Pangst. Her enunciation is concise and easy to understand, and a pleasure to hear. And the book itself kept me interested and even enthralled for over 40hours of listening. If you like Dickens, you will love this book, with all its ups and downs and twists and turns and changes in fortunes. The society depicted is remarkably like our own society today. Thank you, Audible!

Gulp is the best book I have listened to in a very long time! Very informative and well-researched (and Roach graciously takes the reader along with her to visit various labs and research facilities), the book is filled with historical and scientific anecdotes, as well, to make the narrative all the more interesting.

You don't need a college degree or a stellar IQ to understand Roach's clear and concise explanations. If she were teaching classes or lecturing at a local venue, I'd be in line to sign up for every one of them, not least because of the wry wit with which she seasons what could otherwise be considered a somewhat distasteful subject to many readers. As I listened, I found myself laughing out loud again and again, often disturbing my husband's sleep.

Bravo, Mary Roach! Bravo!

This would have been a page-turner, had it been a real book, with so many interesting characters (quirky and non) and plot developments. I stayed up late listening to it every night, until my eyelids would no longer stay open.

Sally Darling reads with a warm, down-home inflection, and I found her singing both lovely and very helpful, as I was unfamiliar with most of the ballads McCrumb referenced. Altogether , a very satisfying read.

I read all of Austen's finished novels that I could get my hands on when I was a teen, and still enjoy rereading Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility every few years. And the A&E production of Pride and Prejudice (with Colin Firth as the most delicious Mr. Darcy!) sticks so close to the novel that it is almost the same as reading the novel, but with eye candy. So I was surprised that I didn't enjoy Northanger Abbey. Perhaps it was the adaptation, or the "play" format, if it was very much abridged (since I prefer unabridged books), or maybe the novel was one I hadn't really cared for, even as a teen. I found no fault with the narration, though, just didn't enjoy the bare bones of the story, I guess.

Perhaps too profound for listening?

I found this book depressing, and if it was meant to be profound, or was filled with symbolism, I confess that I missed it entirely, so perhaps it would be a better choice for reading and meditation than listening. I like to finish what I start, so I listened all the way through, hoping to find some nuggets of wisdom or, failing that, hoping that the lives of the characters would improve, somehow, and that all would be well in the end. But this is not a "feel-good" book, and not one that I will look back on and be glad that I "read" it. I must compliment Sam Waterston, however, on the fact that the tone of his narration perfectly matched the lugubrious tone of the book.
