Historia
Scotty Bowman is recognized as the best coach in hockey history, and one of the greatest coaches in all of sports. He won more games and more Stanley Cups than anyone else. Despite all the changes in hockey, he coached at the very top for more than four decades, his first Cup win and his last an astonishing thirty-nine years apart. Yet perhaps most uniquely, different from anyone else who has ever lived or ever will again, he has continuously experienced the best of hockey since he was fourteen years old.

This is a hockey history book, not a biography
Revisado: 01-12-25
This is a good book for hockey historians who enjoy learning about the great players and teams of the past, but it’s not really a book about Scotty. In truth, it’s a retrospective on great NHL teams through the lens of Bowman’s own recollections. Readers looking for a book about Bowman may be quite disappointed. But readers who like in-depth analysis on great teams of the past will be in heaven.

A masterpiece narrated by the master
Revisado: 06-09-24
This book isn’t just narrated, it is the channeling of the soul of one of the world’s greatest actors. I only wish that he might have explored more serious acting after Seinfeld ended because he is clearly a serious man with a serious talent that should have extended beyond comedy. This book is a marvelous telling of a heartfelt story of a complex man searching to make sense and use of his complexity. And as weighty of a journey as it sometimes was, it was from the depth of his unique complexity that he blessed us all with one of the greatest characters in television history. This is a man to be treasured, and this book explains why.

Historia
Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches—but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined.

A Very Disappointing Bait-and-Switch
Revisado: 11-26-23
This book is not what it claims to be. The first part focuses on what you would expect, which is the killing of witches in Salem, Massachusetts. But then, more than half the book wanders into an undisciplined journey into American revolutionary history that is not only boring and irrelevant to the book's title, but seems like it should be its own book. O'Reilly and Dugard have unintentionally disgraced the memories of the Salem Witch Trial victims by abandoning the witch-trial story so early to make the leap into the revolutionary war. I really expect much more of O'Reilly because he is so attuned to his audience and readers. But in this instance, he dropped the ball in a big way. Very disappointing book that fails to meet the standards of the other Killing series installments.

Studies keep showing that love after 50 is more satisfying than at any other stage in life, and it makes sense: At this stage, you are more emotionally stable and more focused on the present; you know what you absolutely have to have, but also what you can live without; partnering is no longer about building family and fortune — it’s about sharing intimacy as grounded individuals. And sex isn’t pass/fail anymore, but about becoming erotic friends.

Very helpful, and somewhat annoying
Revisado: 10-05-23
This book has one of the most annoying, lengthy disclaimers that I've ever heard in an audiobook. Then, throughout the book, the author seems intent on telling us "name changed" every time a person's name is mentioned. Overall, the books is informative and insightful.

Historia
Life has a way of provoking us with traffic jams and computer malfunctions, with emotionally distant partners and crying children—and before we know it, we're upset. We feel terrible, and then we end up saying and doing things that only make matters worse. But it doesn't have to be that way, says Pema Chödrön. It is possible to relate constructively to the inevitable shocks, losses, and frustrations of life so that we can find true happiness. The key, Pema explains, is not biting the "hook" of our habitual responses.

This isn’t a book
Revisado: 05-03-23
When I purchase an audiobook, I do so because I believe it’s an actual book from which I hope to gain insights that can only be formulated by an author who has developed and refined those insights through the process of writing. DON’T BITE THE HOOK is just a recorded interview, which lacks depth and nuance. At times it is thought-provoking but, overall, is very disappointing.

Typical refusal to explain how to do TM
Revisado: 12-07-22
Really disappointed. Not sure why this book was even written. It’s laughable that these TM experts refuse to come out and explain, within reason, how to do TM. You have to pay your 500 to 1000 dollars to work with a certified teacher.

Insightful but not helpful
Revisado: 10-02-22
This book does an excellent job of helping readers appreciate the seriousness of stress illness but doesn’t really help teach readers how to identify their stress types. The narrator is annoying and should know that the G is silent in words ending in -ing. Words like “raining” sound like “rainink”. I think this is a good book and worth the read, but I found it annoying and not as prescriptive as I hoped it would be.

Historia
When it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that "the science is settled." In reality, the long game of telephone from research to reports to the popular media is corrupted by misunderstanding and misinformation. Core questions - about the way the climate is responding to our influence, and what the impacts will be - remain largely unanswered. The climate is changing, but the why and how aren't as clear as you've probably been led to believe.

It’s more than about climate; it’s about the integrity of science
Revisado: 10-30-21
One of the best, most well-researched book I’ve ever read. The alarm we should feel is not about the climate, but about the pervasive, irresponsible manipulation of scientific data to score ideological points.
