Historia
For thousands of years, the planet of Belusha has served the galactic Sollan Empire as its most notorious prison planet. It is here the very worst men in the Empire are locked away: murderers, traitors, deserters—each condemned to toil on the oil rigs and scrapyards of the planet in bitter cold, preyed upon both by the men of the Martian Guard set to watch over them, and by the Outborn reavers whose fathers escaped the work camps to scratch a living from the icy wilderness. It is a hard world. A desperate world. And it is here that Lorian Aristedes finds himself: alone; friendless; betrayed.

Best Sun Eater side story!
Revisado: 02-10-25
This book is WAY better than the previous two novellas and most of the sun eater short stories. Incredible story with a ton of twists and different approach to Sun Eater

Historia
Hadrian Marlowe is newly a knight of the galaxy-spanning Sollan Empire: a hero who they say slew the alien Prince Aranata Otiolo in single combat; a man they say no man or xenobite can kill. Acting on the Emperor’s orders, Hadrian has come to the desert planet Thagura and driven off the Cielcin invaders, rescuing in the process the Lady Gadar Malyan, Baroness of that entire world. But not all the fighting is ended.

Decent story that drags at the end
Revisado: 01-19-25
Interesting story that finds a matured Hadrian losing more innocence in the galaxy. More information about the Cielsin and the Empire. The story itself is fairly straightforward and feels like an episode of a TV Show. The major twist is found about 50-60% through and the resolution drags a bit. Worth a shot though if you’re committed to reading the whole series and getting maximum enjoyment in sequence

Enjoying how the world and characters are developing. The characters go through ups and downs and aren’t magically improving. There’s also a surprising horror element to the story as it develops as well and wild plot twists. Nice book!

Answering her summons, Crispin takes off on what should be a routine flight to the ducal palace from the castle at Devil’s Rest. But he is flying into a trap. There are whispers of treachery among the duchess’s many daughters, rumors of hidden knives in the planet’s court...if he can even make it there.

Alright

Alright story in between the first and second book in the main series which humanizes the main characters little brother
It’s a little cliche and the role a modern world phenomenon in this story made the story a chore to go through at times. It is good, though and worth reviewing if you’re committed to the overall series.

Historia
The galaxy remembers Hadrian Marlowe as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

Slow start that gets really good
Revisado: 01-06-25
Almost gave up on the book because I didn’t like the main character, but it really picked up halfway through. The main character is a bit of a spoiled brat, but isn’t given godlike powers. He often loses battles and has to maneuver situations skillfully to find a way out. I grew to appreciate that as well as the growing world. Will see how things turn out

Historia
The small island of Malaz and its city gave the great empire its name, but now it is little more than a sleepy, backwater port. Tonight, however, things are different. Tonight the city is on edge, a hive of hurried, sometimes violent activity; its citizens bustle about, barring doors, shuttering windows, avoiding any stranger's stare. Because tonight there is to be a convergence, the once-in-a-generation appearance of a Shadow Moon - an occasion that threatens the good people of Malaz with demon hounds and other, darker things....

Good alternative start to the series
Revisado: 10-28-24
It’s not amazing writing, but this book gives so much important information for enjoying the main series. I wish I read this around the start of the main series instead of after!
Erickson’s style is non-traditional. The theme of the novel is more important than explaining everything or completing all character arcs.
Esslemont is the exact opposite. The story and themes are simple, but critical characters, events and concepts are explained in beautiful detail. This in turn makes the main series far more enjoyable

Almost to the end
Revisado: 10-02-24
Curious how the book will end. Still a lot of remaining mysteries and unresolved ends. This book was decent, though keeps introducing new characters while leaving important characters in the dark, getting lost in tangents and having odd comic relief along with some of the most disturbing scenes in the whole series. Kind of uneven, but this is supposed to be the first half of a larger whole.

Historia
All is not well in the Letherii Empire. Rhulad Sengar, the Emperor of a Thousand Deaths, spirals into madness, surrounded by sycophants and agents of his Machiavellian chancellor, while the Letherii secret police conduct a campaign of terror against their own people. The Errant, once a far-seeing god, is suddenly blind to the future. Conspiracies seethe throughout the palace as the empire edges closer to all-out war with the neighboring kingdoms.

Solid continuance of story
Revisado: 08-15-24
Solid book. If you’re this far, you’re probably going to finish the whole series. It was good, but not the best so far. Lots of important events and knowledge, but the writing felt clunky. There was smooth pacing for the most part, but at times there were excessive POVs which split up the action and flow too much. Also lots of foreshadowing for events that didn’t take up much time and no foreshadowing for events that took much longer. Malazan is very unique as far as fantasy goes and the writing is a part of it as well.

Historia
The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y’Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails. The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress makes the battle-weary Malazan Fourteenth Army uneasy. For it was here that the Empire’s greatest champion, Dassem Ultor, was slain and a tide of Malazan blood spilled. A place of foreboding, its smell is of death. But elsewhere, agents of a far greater conflict have made their opening moves.

Consistently great Malazan book
Revisado: 04-07-24
This book was a journey! A lot of the Malazan books have moments that drag or long moments of confusion. To my knowledge, most of the core elements are established so it’s just plot and what a plot it is. So many things happen, characters and storylines intertwine and you’re kept on the edge of your toes throughout. Really good stuff!

Historia
After decades of internecine warfare, the tribes of the Tiste Edur have at last united under the Warlock King of the Hiroth. There is peace - but it has been exacted at a terrible price: a pact made with a hidden power whose motives are at best suspect, at worst, deadly. To the south, the expansionist kingdom of Lether, eager to fulfill its long-prophesized renaissance as an Empire reborn, has enslved all its less-civilized neighbors with rapacious hunger. All, that is, save one - the Tiste Edur. And it must be only a matter of time before they too fall.

Decent Malazan book
Revisado: 03-18-24
Decent book, but a bit of a slog at times. Midnight Tides introduces an entirely new set of characters in a different area which fleshes out the Malazan world.
The Tiste Edur featured in the last book are given context and the Lethari, a potential enemy of Malazan are also introduced. By the end, you get a deeper understanding of what’s going on.
The story kind of drags in the worst way Malazan can. Characters and the main scenario/conflict is introduced which is fun. Then there’s a slog in the middle where some things are happening but it’s a lot of philosophizing on the theme of the book and character conflict and then an outburst of action.
Some of the previous books aren’t as bad in this fashion, but this story has some boring moments. Some of the characters were hits (Tehol and Bug), but others weren’t that interesting and I felt the story dragging.
The last part ramps up though and the ending is amazing.
