The year is 1990 and the place is a slightly altered Cleveland, Ohio, which sits on the edge of a suburban wasteland-the Great Ohio Desert. Lenore works as a switchboard attendant at a publishing firm, and in addition to her mind-numbing job, she has a few other problems. Wallace never disappointments
Revisado: 04-05-23
Genius - exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability
Genius is how I would describe the author David Foster Wallace. The novels and short stories I've read or listens to are smart and impactful (if thats even a word). You're drawn into an alternative reality, the characters diverse but relatable. I've yet to be disappointed.

Historia
Scarred by the senseless death of their son and baffled by the engulfing chaos of the 1960s, Joe Allston and his wife, Ruth, have left the coast for a California retreat. And although their new home looks like Eden, it also has its serpents: Jim Peck, a messianic exponent of drugs, yoga, and sex, and Marian Catlin, an attractive young woman whose otherwordly innocence is far more appealing—and far more dangerous.

Struggling to finding a better book
Revisado: 04-02-23
This novel was one of the finest I've listened to. An aging man ,evaluating his life. The dialogue between the characters is rich with substance and post reflection. Wallace brings an elevated level of intellect to his writing that is had to match or even compare to other authors .

Historia
An underground classic, Crash explores the disturbing potentialities of contemporary society's increasing dependence on technology as intermediary in human relations. In this hallucinatory novel, the car provides the hellish tableau in which Vaughan, a "TV scientist" turned "nightmare angel of the highways", experiments with erotic atrocities among auto crash victims, each more sinister then the last.

Revisado: 02-08-23
This goes on the list of hard to read/listen books. It goes into vivid detail about a man's sexual acts and the brutally of car crashes. Maybe it's because I'm a women I found it hard to relate to?

Historia
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

Historia
In anticipation of her 38th birthday, Katherine May set out to walk the 630-mile South West Coast Path. She wanted time alone, in nature, to understand why she had stopped coping with everyday life; why motherhood had been so overwhelming and isolating; and why the world felt full of expectations she couldn't meet. She was also reeling from a chance encounter with a voice on the radio that sparked her realisation that she might be autistic.

Revisado: 01-27-23
I've enjoyed Katherine May writing and this book is no exception. Maybe it's because I relate her words and experiences as a mother, partner, friend individual. While walking or engaging with others I have similar thoughts and reactions. Her words captive those bring a sense of relief that I'm not the only one.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Quirky and Fun take on Motherhood
Revisado: 12-27-22
Come to this book with a open mind and you won't be disappointed. It's quirky but that's what makes it special. As a mother I found it relateable and humorous. The author was able to lighten the roles and expectations many of create about what being a good mother means and how to achieve it. Combine Superb narration made for a one day listen.
