Historia
To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

Where have you been all my life?
Revisado: 10-04-24
When I started this audiobook, and it was a child’s voice speaking, I groaned a and thought “here we go“. But it needed to be a child’s voice. The child’s voice magnified the horror and the dread in the story, which was legitimately scary. It’s been a long time since I have found a story that disturbed me so much. And as it turns out, the narration was perfect. I will be looking for other audiobooks by this offer, and I highly recommend the story.

Historia
Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

Historia
From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

The antagonists were truly frightful
Revisado: 08-08-24
Truly frightening, with well-drawn characters. It’s giving Stephen King a run for his money. And it’s a redemption story.

Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Main character angsty
Revisado: 11-27-23
I felt like the main protagonist was kind of bratty and fairly ungrateful. But there was some context around the first. The central love story was gorgeous. I loved the entire premise. Prose is lovely, but a little overboard at times.

Fun YA story
Revisado: 09-16-23
I had not realized it was YA until I was a bit into it. And I had a real problem with the narration as the emphasis on words was often out of place. But overall it was a fun listen!

Did you read The Elementals?
Revisado: 09-04-22
Well don’t read this then. I was so excited to read another of this authors’s books after the excellent, atmospheric, legitimately frightening Elementals! I slogged through this for several chapters, hoping there was going to be some unexpected twist. Nope. This could not have been the same author, no matter what Google says. It was simplistic, clunky, injecting gore that felt at complete odds with the prudish and naive heroine. If only she had been an early victim. The story would have been shorter, and that’s a good thing.
The narrator went really overboard with the crude hillbilly voices, and those characters (like most of them) were 2-dimensional.
I fell asleep a few times while listening, and never felt compelled to rewind to the chapters I missed. Trust me, and take a hard pass on this one.
