This book tells the story of a boy who learns of his lineage and must grapple with court politics, his own identity, precarious friendships, and a new found power and opportunity. The book does a good job of showing coming of age moments for the main character as he learns about love, loyalty, duty, found family, betrayal, and forgiveness. I enjoyed reading the different segments of the main character life as he grows up and discovers who he is and is also tested in many ways. The magic system is interesting, subtle, and mysterious. The narrator did a good job acting out the voices of the characters and reflecting the mood of each scene even when reading descriptions and not just dialogue. The narrator also gives that “once upon a time” quality to his reading, which I liked. I recommend this book. It’s the first full book I have read/listened to by this author and I enjoyed it!

This was another great Sherrilyn Kenyon book! I love her writing style. Her books have that feel good, wholesome love but also has some spice and characters that aren’t shy to be rough when necessary. This book brings in a lot of magical creatures, royal foes and allies, interesting magic, and quests that intertwine. Fred Berman does a great job as always voicing the different characters. This book can stand alone but leaves room to have other backstories or future stories of some of the characters as this author likes to do. Anyway, I recommend!

If you like a time traveling story of a modern woman traveling back to the time of the Vikings, this is a good story. It’s a little reminiscent to Outlander, but more of a simple story. Its focus is on pregnancy so whether or not you like that kind of thing in romance, there you go. The spice level I would say is medium level spicy. Intimate scenes are specific but the story doesn’t have those kinds of scenes every other page. Overall, cute and entertaining story. Both narrators also did a good job.

This book was really satisfying. I didn’t like book 3 as much but a lot things in it made a lot more sense after reading book 4. The characters get better and the story takes a lot of interesting turns. I like the new characters that are introduced in this book and the overall pack politics. Worth reading!

Just meh but I’m giving book 4 a chance

UPDATE: In light of certain revelations in Book 4 I would give this one more star. The plot points I didn’t like are making more sense now.

———-

I didn’t really like this book as much as book 1 and 2. It felt like a filler story and it was hard for me to pay attention while listening to the audiobook. The spicy scenes are more frequent and feel a bit forced and just filling pages. I also didn’t like some of the new “good” characters that are introduced to be honest. They felt a little bit flat and naive even though they are supposed to be older and wiser. There’s also more fighting between two main characters, which I don’t like—I wish it was resolved faster. I do like, however, a redemption arc that seemingly starts for one of the villains. I’m still giving book 4 a chance. I am interested to see how the conflict between the packs and the mate bond issue is resolved.

This second book does well building on book 1 and there’s a good tension building between the two main characters. I liked this book and the character development. There’s also some good lore explained.

This was a good start to this series. I’ve just started book 4 of the series. I would say the first two books were exciting and I got through them quickly. Book three was so so, it felt kind of like a filler book and there were certain new characters I wasn’t a fan of but I think the audience was supposed to like. This book (book 1) gets you hooked and there’s kind of an enemies to lovers with a complicated other unwanted “romance.” There’s some twists later on in the story that get set up well in this book. This book is worth the read.

This story had so many twists and turns, I never knew what to expect. It really kept me reading. There are some lulls when they have to describe the younger characters, but it is necessary to understand the characters later on and their arc. This was a fitting end to an action-packed story. While I am sad about some characters, it’s all part of the journey. I kept trying to guess what the outcome would be but I was wrong in the end! I think this book does a good job in wrapping up the story in a way that allows the characters to still stand by their principles. What a ride of a story. I highly recommend this book! The voice actor also did a great job throughout.

This series has been great! I think the first book was my favorite but this second book did well in building on the characters and introducing new ones. The author really created characters with depth and nuance. No one is a perfect person, even the heroes. A simple summary of the vibe and kind of story is that there’s a society that has deep roots in martial arts practices involving wearing bioenergetic jade that gives the wearer supernatural, added strength (the more jade, the stronger the power). The main society is kind of mafia-esque with several mafia families that are either friends or enemies. There are other societies reminiscent of the British with British colonialism and British street gangs. I’m not quite sure what comparison I could make to the other countries and societies included in the story—they are just distinct in their own ways. The main “mafia” family (clan) is dynastic, passing power from parent to child. There’s politics, power struggles, threats by one clan against another. You see different family members struggling with their identities, with their responsibilities as members of their clan, with expectations placed upon them, and with the clan culture of violence. The jade and a certain chemical that allows some people to handle wearing it is both like drugs and a drug trade—so you have that kind of vibe in the story. There’s various moments where characters find themselves in a position they did not expect. Some characters also are determined to go in one direction, against expectations placed on them, and come to accept going back to the things they were running from to begin with. Multiple characters come to realize that there are multiple ways to live and that they don’t have to fully reject or live outside of where they came from. This book is also really progressive in that the story shows that even against the conventions of the fictional society, women in that society can be strong leaders, fighters, politicians, and advisors. It also has some lgbtq characters that keep their feelings hidden at first due to societal opinions but grow to be confident and open about who they are and their abilities as leaders, fighters, healers, partners, and members of their clan. The book explores themes of people living as immigrants in different cultures and all the things they have to deal with, people born or parents that are each from different societies and ethnicities, cultural classes in communication and negotiation, and more. Overall, this book was a refreshing story to listen to and the voice actor did great. It just had a unique vibe compared to many other books that are popular right now. While there is some romance, it’s not too spicy in my opinion. This isn’t a romance book, it’s a book of action, political intrigue, and about the path to keeping, gaining, or destroying power. It’s also about family. Don’t underestimate anyone in this book. Anyway, I highly recommend!

I just put in my review for part 2 of 2 of this book with the same review title if you want to read more. This series was fantastic and the voice actors and actresses, sound effects, and music were great. This has become one of my favorite series. It has it all and was an adventure to read. This would be a great series to make into a movie or tv show to be honest—it has so many vivid details and locations. The futuristic details about each class level of society and about “carving” had a vibe like Altered Carbon or the new Blade Runner. The plight of the Reds made me think of something reminiscent of the French Revolution and/or William Wallace and the Scottish. The story also draws on a lot of Greco-Roman mythology and some Viking mythology. All of this is layered on a futuristic society in space with spaceships and colonies across this galaxy. They seem to wield the power of Jurassic Park, being able to “carve” or create giant creatures. There’s a sort of hunger games-esque arena to start. There’s the excess of the Roman Empire and a tyrannical villain like Caligula or Nero. There’s a pack of friends like their own covert ops Seal team. There’s human depravity and even the “good guys” having to make hard decisions. This series was highly entertaining and I highly recommend. The Graphic Audio production was also amazing. I think this was my first Graphic Audio series to listen to and my second story to listen to that had a full cast of actors. It definitely helps keep up with who is who. Anyway, great story!
