Historia
I don’t agree with many of the words you’ve used, but I will give you this: They do have a way of looking at you sideways that can be unsettling. So begins a letter from Nathaniel, a PhD candidate who’s recently moved from the east coast to Orinda, California. Nathaniel knows that his brother, Brice, who still lives near their mother in Michigan, couldn’t possibly understand the nuances of his and Cate’s new life: their eclectic community, their work in academia, and the liberal, alternative thinking that shapes the way they’ve handled their fertility issues.

What Did I Just Listen To???
Revisado: 09-11-24
I understood that this was a weird story and approached it with an open mind. But... this was just too weird. A man nearing a mental breakdown writes his brother about he and his wife's loss of a pregnancy 1 month before term. OK. But the therapy for the wife involves adopting two rabbits to breast feed and mother?! I sympathize with the man nearing his mental capacity trying to understand all this. Is this some comment on men being overlooked for empathy after a pregnancy loss? Who knows. Just too weird.

The road he travels with his burden and his prisoner is fraught with danger. But in the midst of political chaos, magic has the fiercer hold on Ingrey's destiny, and Ijada herself may turn out to be the only one he dares trust.

Convoluted, complex, yet intriguing new world
Revisado: 11-20-23
I think this is going to require another listen in the year ahead. I was already familiar with LMB's World of the Five Gods, but the tightly intertwined world of politics, history, religion, family connections, and avenues to power were more complex than in her other books in this universe. The narrator skillfully handled the various male and female voices with creativity.

An aspiring artist gets a seven-figure offer that could change her life forever in this provocative and surprising short story of a woman torn between saying yes and saying no. Alicia could do a lot with a million dollars. But what’s she willing to do for it? Her top client, a billionaire hedge fund manager, has made a very intimate business proposal. In the world of finance, it’s just another transaction, right? An efficient supply-demand exchange. At least that’s what Alicia tries to tell herself.

Total CRINGE the whole story!
Revisado: 01-28-23
I've enjoyed the rest of these slice-of-life tales about young women in the big city and how they react to the entitled assholery of the men they run into. This story, however, was Cringe throughout. A wealthy client of Alicia's bank makes an offer to Alicia with no discernable motivation. Alicia then spends the rest of the first-person narrative on mental hysteria, moral contortions, frantic internal dialogue, and a total lack of judgment, spine, self-esteem, and ownership of her own actions and desires. "Yes, No, I Changed My Mind." Own it, girl!

Historia
Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

A MUST LISTEN!
Revisado: 10-14-22
Gripping narration and beautifully written and compelling religious drama story. What truly brings this story to life in such a visceral way is the author's voice. I bought this book two days ago and finished it barely a minute ago. My favorite book of the year!

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Great Book, But Should Be Called The White City
Revisado: 12-30-20
I really enjoyed this book, however as a true crime aficionado I was expecting more of a story about HH Holmes. The book is a fascinating retelling of the building of the Chicago world's Fair, which in and of itself is an amazing feat to behold. however, I would say about 75% of this book is about the Chicago world's Fair and only about 25% is a look at HH Holmes. I was expecting a little bit more about homes, and in that respect was disappointed. But overall, I would highly recommend this read.

Exciting plot. Terrible Narration.
Revisado: 08-26-20
To echo other reviews here, Emma Galvin did a stupidly terrible job in narration and I will be sure to NEVER buy a book she's narrated in the future. I had to steel myself to ignore her mid-phrase pauses, her lack of difference in voice or tone between characters and did I mention her pausing in odd places unwarranted by punctuation or natural flow of speech? Nearly gave up on the book after the first chapter or two.
Aside from the narration, the story was exciting, well-plotted, with interesting characters. The underlying romance is typical of 1990's style with a stalwart, enigmatic hero and a courageous but emotionally immature and insecure heroine who hates the hero, constantly misunderstands his actions, but who realizes her mistakes before the finale. Reminds me of romances I used to read 30 years ago.
The plot has more intricacy than expected. The politics and factions are well represented. The battles and cross country journeys are vivid. The climax is unexpected, but well set up. If you can get past the narration, this is a fun, diverting escape.

Great book, the reader's voice is atrocious
Revisado: 01-21-20
The book is very informative, but the reader's voice is terrible. Her overwrought vocalization of each word and continual stress on the word "moreover" is beyond irritating. Would highly recommend getting the hard copy version.
