Historia
Tensions during the Yalta Conference in February 1945 threatened to tear apart the wartime alliance among Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin just as victory was close at hand. Catherine Grace Katz uncovers the dramatic story of the three young women who were chosen by their fathers to travel with them to Yalta, each bound by fierce family loyalty, political savvy, and intertwined romances that powerfully colored these crucial days.

Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

Not tooo bad but not real great.
Revisado: 12-31-24
This was a pretty good listen but I wouldn't add it to my Great Reads of 2024 list nor a Picoult favorite. The historical part of the story was well researched and seemed true to the times. It seemed most of the historical characters were one dimensional - either they were a good decent person or a bad person, no real layers or depth. The modern day story was what kept me from giving this a higher rating. I found the main character Melina flat & a bit whiny, it was hard to feel sympathetic towards her. Also I thought the relationship of Melina & Jasper seemed develop too quickly - he was a real jerk (despite his childhood/development) - made me loose some respect for Melina. Again, not sorry I read this one just did't LOVE it.

Historia
Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl has captivated and inspired people for decades. Published posthumously by her bereaved father, Anne's journal, written while she and her family were in hiding during World War II, has become one of the central texts of the Jewish experience during the Holocaust, as well as a work of literary genius. Bestselling author Alice Hoffman delivers a stunning novel about one of contemporary history's most acclaimed figures, exploring the little-known details of Anne Frank's life before she went into hiding.

Another great Alice Hoffman book
Revisado: 09-29-24
Alice Hoffman is one of my most favorite authors - her prose is always so lyrical and thought provoking. This story is Hoffman's imaging of Anne Frank's life in the Netherlands before her family went into hiding during WWII. Even though it is about a frightening time, it gracefully captures the thoughts and emotions of a bright young girl growing into her own. The book may be categorized as a young adult book but it is relevant for the adult reader as well - especially anyone who read the book Diary of Young Girl as teen themselves.
It was excellently narrated by Mara Wilson.
Hoffman's author's note (read by the author) was as touching & significant as the entire book. Hoffman concludes her note by saying that Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank should be required reading of every 13 year old in the United States and in the world. I completely agree.

Historia
In April 1975, Ralph White was asked by his boss to transfer from the Bangkok branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank to the Saigon Branch. He was tasked with closing the branch if and when it appeared that Saigon would fall to the North Vietnamese army and ensure the safety of the senior Vietnamese employees. But when he arrived, he realized the situation in Saigon was far more perilous than he had imagined. The senior staff members there urged him to evacuate the entire staff of the branch and their families, which was far more than he was authorized to do.

I was really interested in reading this book to learn more about the last days of Saigon, as I was a teenager in 1975 & didn’t really follow the current news/events as closely as I do now. The book received good reviews from both Audible & on Goodreads. And while White had a very interesting and exciting first-hand account of those last days, his detours into his sexual encounters and misogynistic reminisces of the women of Saigon was off-putting and unnecessary. Considering this book’s copywrite is 2023 - his editors could have guided him to write a more mature story with the gravity it probably deserves.
There was enough content to make me want to read other (better written) accounts of the Fall of Saigon but not enough to really recommend this book to others.

I really enjoyed this book. The main characters and their story is believable & captivating. Juliet Stevenson' narration was wonderful bringing both women and all the other characters to life, Rachel Joyce's descriptions of the world of New Caledonia are magical and the misadventures, joys, friendship and tragedies of Margery & Enid made me love them.

As a precocious kid who took Broadway by storm at the age of 18, Laura Benanti spent her formative years playing grown-ups onstage, but it took her a while to figure out how to be one in real life. With her razor-sharp wit and unapologetic candor, Benanti shares her hard-won insights on topics like marriage, motherhood, perimenopause, female friendship, and making peace with the younger versions of ourselves.

This was a great listen. I wish I could have seen it in person but since that wasn't possible, this was the next best thing.
I have enjoyed her in movies, TV shows - especially when she does her Melania impression on Colbert. Her sense of humor & timing is great & I appreciated her honesty about herself. This was a great free listen from the Plus catalog.

Historia
While this nation has yet to elect its first woman president—and though history has downplayed her role—just over a century ago a woman became the nation’s first acting president. In fact, she was born in 1872, and her name was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. For the first time, we have a biography that takes an unflinching look at the woman whose ascent mirrors that of many powerful American women before and since, one full of the compromises and complicities women have undertaken throughout time in order to find security for themselves and make their mark on history.
