Historia
Sloths are the slowest mammals on earth. They can hardly see. They live in rainforests among jaguars, pumas, and countless other predators. Yet they survive. And they do it by being so incredibly slow, and living a life covered in algae. In this episode, we hang with a sloth in the jungle of Costa Rica as he spends a month digesting one single leaf, and we see the symbiosis and collaboration that surrounds him.

Informative & relaxing

The pace was fitting for talking about a sloth. Slow and gentle. It made me smile and was perfect for relaxing my mind for sleep.

In a symbolic journey of reconciliation, the Monsoon Express is travelling between hostile neighbours India and Pakistan. The passenger list includes politicians, celebrities, former Mumbai policeman Inspector Chopra and his baby elephant ward, Ganesha. Then a senior diplomat is found murdered in his cabin. Best one yet
Revisado: 10-03-22
In all the Inspector Chopra books, I’ve enjoyed getting to know him, his wife and the usual characters. Even better, in the context of a cozy mystery I am introduced to Mumbai and Indian culture.
In this one, the Inspector has grown into his role as a private investigator with integrity & a network of resources. I learned about the tensions between India & Pakistan and their historical roots. It’s a difficult situation & he handles it masterfully and with compassion.
People have compared it to the First Lady Detective Agency series (Alexander McCall Smith), also set in another culture. It also reminds me of the Jim Chee series (Tony and Ann Hillerman).

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Hauntingly beautiful tale
Revisado: 04-18-20
I had to set a time limit or I would have finished this too quickly-- and I wanted to savor it. Unusual, imperfect protagonists develop. Multiple threads weave together to create a tight, tense climax. All of this set in different historic and cultural eras. The narrator portrayed the variety of characters beautifully; I could hear the sinister intent behind the caring tone of the corrupt mystic, and the confused heartbreak behind the proud voice of the Jinni.
After I finished the book, I went back over the last three chapters a couple more times. A lot to absorb, and I didn't want it to end.

Heartfelt, beautiful journey from the first lady's perspective
Revisado: 07-31-19
Inspirational, thoughtful behind-the-scenes look at the journey to the white house, and the experience of being the first black family in the white house. I appreciated her honest look at her own struggles and uncertainties. I like how she approached this traditional role ( first lady) as a professional woman. Could really relate to her struggles, hopes & fears. I loved hearing her read her story. What a strong, inspirational woman!
