I thought the narration was great. The characters were great. I really wish there was a bit more story. I felt like the characters deserved more story. This novella was mostly about sex and I understand that is the point with erotica. It would have just been nice to have more story line with the characters.

I received this audiobook at no-cost from Audiobookworm Promotions. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

15. A Nominal Mistress by Karen M. Cox. (Eleanor Tilney.)

16. The Edification of Lady Susan by Jessie Lewis. (Lady Susan.)

This collection of stories is taking a deeper dive into Austen’s greatest female characters. I thought it was definitely interesting to see someone else’s take on these characters. We had a variety of characters from the heroines to the minors. A lot of the ideas behind these short stories come the feminist ideas that are discussed in Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Women.

The narrator was such a perfect match for this book. I loved how she performed all the different characters. She was so easy to listen too. I thought that her British accent fit so well. She put so much life into these stores that I felt I was really able to get to know these characters.

I thought the writers and narrator did a fantastic job with the story collection mash up. I thought the stories were fun and engaging. The audiobook kept me listening for hours. Over 18 hours. I thought this was a fantastic edition. I found that I really enjoyed this collection.

Vortex Visions by Elise Kova takes place 20 years in the future. So those that follow the series, we have a grown up Vi. Vi is equally both her mother and her father. I swear this is the perfect child of Vhalla and Aldrick. Plus we have an uncle Jax. Vi is seventeen and she just wants to go home to her family. She had to spend her whole life in the North away from her twin brother and her parents. Even though she has seen her parents, she has never met her twin. They only communicate through letters.

I loved getting to know these characters along with some familiar ones. Kova is so great with her character development. I found myself becoming more interested in Andru and Taavin as the new characters in this series. From the very beginning Andru is not what he seems and as we learn more about him, the more I want to know. Taavin is the boy that Vi is able to summon with her newly awoken power.

Kova did a fantastic job writing this book. I feel like she brought us the world of Air Awakens that we have been missing but was also able to bring a whole new story to the readers that keep them completely interested in the story.

I found myself really enjoying the audiobook. I thought the narrator did a fantastic job and it was quite enjoyable. I really love it when an audiobook makes the story so real. I think Vi was really brought to life in the audio version and that made me love it more. I am definitely interested in listening to the next one.

I really liked Logan by Julie Hall because we were able to get more backstory about Logan. Questions from his past are finally answered. I felt like we really had a distinct point of view from Logan.

Logan definitely surprised me. His thoughts were sometimes different than what I expected from him. It was really interesting to see how Kaitlin and Morgan tied into Logan's story. This is a perfect novella for this series. Hall couldn't have picked a better character to write about. I felt like the whole story was interesting and I just loved having Logan's point of view.

Adam Gold did an amazing job narrating Logan. He definitely sounds like how I thought Logan would sound. Gold put on a wonderful performance. I really liked that he did different voices for all the characters. Listening to the audiobook was fantastic. I would highly recommend it.

Warfare by Julie Hall is an amazing follow up to Huntress. I really enjoyed this book. One of my favorite things is the conversations between Audrey and Hugo. The characters really grew in this book and I love that. Warfare is such a phenomenal sequel. Hall really put her all into this one. One thing I really love is how Hall incorporates God and Christian Faith into her book. I think it is a great way to share that with others.

Warfare still had so much world building that I just can't get enough of it. I really felt like I was there with everyone. This especially helped with Vanessa narrating the book. I really feel like Vanessa was the perfect choice to play Audrey. She really makes the book and story come to life. I love Audrey's journey. I think I enjoyed the book so much more listening to Vanessa.

Rain of Ash by Gwen Mitchell is an exciting and fast paced urban fantasy. There is so much going on in this book. If you are looking for a book like City of Bones that has a little bit of everything, don’t look any further because you have found it. This book is packed full of demons, witches, immortals, reincarnation, and lots of soulmates. There is pain, sacrifice, love, and bloodshed. Briana thinks she is cursed and she fights these visions that she keeps having. She thought she was done with her powers when she chose to have them bound at 17. When her gandmother and younger sister turn up dead, Briana knows that she has to go back.

I found myself being extremely captivated by this book. I was drawn in right away with its high pace story line. The narrator easily kept my attention but was a little slow. I found myself speeding up the audiobook a bit. I really enjoyed how the story was narrated by many points of view. I thought this brought even more to the story because I got to know what was happening all the time. That ending! You don’t want to miss this book! Definitely check it out. I give Rain of Ash four out of five stars.

“Unhinged” by A.G. Howard is dark and twisted!

Revisado: 11-13-17

“Unhinged” by A.G. Howard was a dark and twisted sequel to “Splintered.” “Unhinged” picks up several months after “Splintered” ended. Alyssa is trying to figure out her relationship with Jeb but it is a bit difficult because he doesn’t remember any of their time in Wonderland. When Morpheus starts showing up in her dreams again, Alyssa wonders if something is up. Now that Wonderland is in danger again, Alyssa doesn’t want to go back but she is afraid that she must if she is to say her beloved second home.

I really did like “Unhinged.” I felt like I really got know both Alyssa and Morpheus better in this book. I think “Unhinged” focuses a lot on Morpheus and who he is. I really liked getting to know Morpheus better. I think it all sequels where similar to this one then I would enjoy them a whole lot more. I like when I get to know the characters better. I don’t just want to see one side of them but all the sides that make the character. I think Howard did a great job with this one because I truly got to see all sides of these characters.

The biggest complaint that I have is also why it made it so good. The love triangle was getting a little out of hand in “Unhinged.” I also think this is why it made the book good because you really got to know how each character felt about the other one. The back and forth between whom Alyssa should love was really getting old. Then when there is a loop-hole everything becomes a huge mess.

The visual art in this story is amazing. Howard paints such a beautiful Wonderland. It is creepy and sinister but beautiful none the less. I fell in love with it right away. I still think this is one of my favorite “Alice in Wonderland” retellings. I am really looking forward to reading “Ensnared” and seeing how it all ends.

I loved “Undertow” by Michael Buckley.

Revisado: 11-13-17

I loved “Undertow” by Michael Buckley. Parts of this book reminded me a lot of the tv show that played on CW “Starcrossed.” Instead of Aliens, we are faced with some sort of fish creatures called the Alpha. Everything has changed in Coney Island.

Lyric Walker is a 16-year-old girl who used to be a wild child. She used to get herself into all kind of trouble but for the last several years she has just been lying low. She shows up to school when she is supposed too and she keeps her head down low. The last thing Lyric walker wants to do is cause any trouble.

Now it is the first day of school that everyone has been waiting for. There are protesters lining the streets because today is the day that six Alpha will join the school with the human kids. No one likes this idea, but the government is wanting to try to see what happens. Lyric goes to school like she is supposed too and well a fight breaks out in one of her classes. Instead of letting the students keep on fighting each other Lyric steps in to try to stop the fight, resulting in everyone getting into trouble.

Then the principal, Doyle, tells Lyric that she is going to help him with a special project or he will put her in lock up. Come to find out this special project is for her to meet with Fathom, the prince of the Alpha, every day to help him learn the ways of humans. Of course Lyric objected but she ended up having to do it anyway. Lyric starts teaching Fathom an even though she is reluctant about it she starts to enjoy their little visits. Everything in Coney Island is about to change and humans aren’t ready for it.

I really liked Lyric Walker’s character. Lyric used to be this extremely selfish girl and now she is obeying her parents and lying low to protect her family. She also knows when to stick up for others because it isn’t fair for them to be treated badly. A lot of people call Lyric names and she still holds her head high. She still does her assignment and she still tries to find a way to protect her family including her friends. Life isn’t easy for Lyric but she is willing to do the best that she can do.

I really liked this story because it kept me engrossed the entire time. I listened to the audio-book and I think that Jennifer Grace did a fantastic job of narrating. I think she does a great job of telling the story because she puts so much heart into the story. I love that she does voices and she makes the reader feel like they are a part of the story not just listening to it. This is the first book that I have read by Michael Buckley and I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading book two of the “Undertow” trilogy.

“Falling Kingdoms” by Morgan Rhodes was our second book club pick. I actually ended up listening to the audiobook more than reading the book itself. I will cover the audiobook towards the end because I have thoughts on that too.

I feel like I read this a bit late. I think if I would have read this when it came out, I probably would have been more impressed. Since I Read this years later, I feel like there is a lot better fantasy books out there. With that being said, I don’t think it was a bad book, just not the greatest.

I am always looking for some good fantasy books. I read a lot of dystopian but I like to mix it up with some fantasy and contemporary too. I have a desire to keep myself rounded. With this being my newest fantasy try I was wishing for more fantasy elements and less drama.

What I liked:

I love that two of the leads are women. I tend to find that a lot of fantasy books have male leads, so I do like when the genre gets mixed up a bit and there are female leads.
I love the cover. I do think this should count for something.
I am intrigued by the world. I don’t think the world building was terrific but I am very curious about it.
Magic. I want to know more.
What I disliked:

Why are there so many characters? I feel like “Falling Kingdoms” had way too many characters. I had a hard time trying to keep up with everyone. I feel like it didn’t give the reader enough time to get to know the characters.
So many different plots and sub-plots. I feel like this book had a lot of things going on. I didn’t know what to focus on. I was listening to the audiobook and I finally had to give up on keeping track of the kingdoms, so that way I could just try to keep track of the characters. It felt like every character had its own plot and several sub-plots. I think there is way too much going on.
The magic was confusing and not focused on much. I really want to know more. I hope it develops better.
All the blackmailing. I have never read a book with so much blackmail. Don’t the characters have better things to do?
Wrap up:

I am interested in the series enough to read the next one. I really hope that the story line improves because I am not impressed at this point in time. I feel like “Falling Kingdoms” is no where near as good as some of the other fantasy stories out there. Like I said, I am interested in finding out what happens next, so it does have that going for it.

The audiobook was really confusing in the beginning. I feel like I finally got a hang of it a few chapters in but it was very hard to keep track of all the characters and kingdoms on the audiobook.

“Zeroes” was a really good book.

I read “Zeroes” by Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan, and Deborah Biancotti back in February and I was trying to find my review for a friend and found out that I didn’t have one. I felt that I need to remedy this and get my thoughts out there for the world to see.

“Zeroes” was a really good book. I didn’t know much about Zeroes. I found out that Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan, and Deborah Biancotti were doing an event at my local bookstore and wanted to go. Of course I had my ARC and bought a copy to get signed for my sister. I believe this was back in October. I found out a little about the book then. I was fairly intrigued to read this story.

One thing I love about the three authors writing this story together is the fact that you really can’t tell who wrote what part. I think that is really great. It looks or is completely seamless. I thought Westerfeld, Lanagan, and Biancotti did a great job writing. The story was very though out and fun to read.

“Every Power Has A Price”

That right there is a very powerful statement. This statement made me so curious. I really wanted to know what would be going on in this novel. This story follows six teenagers. Each of these teenagers has some kind of superpower. Each power is different. Some powers will affect everyone and other powers will only affect one person when they are used. The one thing these teenagers have in common is they were all born in the year 2000. The call themselves the Zeroes. A bit of a spin-off of Heroes. They have many missions to learn about their powers or at least they used too. The split up the previous summer over a big fight.

These kids don’t want to be heroes at all. They just want to be themselves and figure out how these powers work for them. One thing I really loved about these characters is the fact that when one of their own was in trouble, they came to the rescue. Even though there was a huge fight and most of them hadn’t talked at all. There is a large cast of main characters. It was a lot of fun getting to see each perspective.

I really enjoyed this novel a lot. I am looking forward to seeing what happens in book two. This story is just about kids who have superpowers. It is about growing up, becoming your own person, dealing with friendships, taking care of one’s family, and many more deep subjects. I really like how the subjects were tackled because I didn’t feel like I was being educated but I was at the same time. This is definitely a fun book that I think everyone should read.
