The premise is compelling: a man was found guilty with no forensic evidence. Is it possible he is innocent? The authors do a good job of interviewing people, but they go over the same stuff in every episode. This could have been halved and been more interesting. They do a good job of starting down a line of thinking, but after introducing the topic, they leave it and go chase down something else. I would’ve liked to have seen further development of some of the alternative theories.

Before I go forward, speed up the narration to at least 1.25. All the pauses and puffed up narration smooth out and it actually becomes a decent read.

The book itself was great. I learned some things, like which Kings were actually in the Plantagenets. It had a good pace, it didn’t dwell on things that had little to do with the subject matter. For instance, many histories of Henry II dwell on Eleanor. This one didn’t. It’s a great read to give you a good overall summary of the various rulers, allowing you to determine if you want to learn more.

This book takes me back to the hard boiled mystery era. Nero Wolfe, Mickey Spillane and such. Kinsey is a detective who takes no guff. She is hired to find out who killed Lawrence Fife, by his wife who was convicted of his murder 8 years previously. During the investigation she gets close with his former partner, has a nice chat with his ex wife and children, and even tried to hook a lady for insurance fraud. Did I figure out who did it before she did? Yes. Did I care? No. Because, really, the story was that enjoyable. Kinsey isn’t some wilting flower looking for protection. There were some funny spots, but overall she didn’t quibble with feelings and wanting someone to love her.

The narrator was perfect for this book! Her matter of fact tone really made it feel like I was watching one of those old Bogart detective movies.

I can’t even get through the first chapter! The first voice, Eileen Stevens, was perfect for the role of Brooklyn and Company. Now this new lady, Susan, has absolutely ruined it for me. She sounds like she’s in her 50s. I am sorry, but I don’t want to hear my grandmother reading this to me. I like the series, and I will get the actual books. I enjoyed the audibles because I could listen while working out. Sort of a treat. I will not be getting any more audiobooks of this series, though.

I like classic mysteries. I’ve read almost all of the Agatha Christie book so I decided to come on to the Dorothy Sayers books. This was a good book, and I will read the rest of the series. Lord Wimsey is the fun-loving aristocrat who solves mysteries on the side. The characters are fun, and Lord Wimsey has depth to him I didn’t expect.

This mystery is a classic body switch. It’s fairly obvious who did it early on. The writing is a mix between Christie and Doyle.

The downside, for me, was the narrator. I could hear him turning the pages, which was mildly irritating. More so was his habit of pausing after every bit of dialogue. “I don’t know”...said Lord Peter. It really took away from the enjoyment of the book. If the same narrator reads the next one, I’ll skip the audio version and just read it on my own.
