started good but dragged out too much
Revisado: 07-17-19
I hated the narrator's voice, first of all. too breathy and dramatic like he was reading Shakespeare. I got used to it because I liked the story, but it dragged out so much, in excruciating detail, I gave up and googled the outcome.

Historia
When a teenage joyrider crashes a stolen car and ends up in a coma, a routine DNA test reveals a connection to an unsolved murder from 22 years before. Finding the answer to the cold case should be straightforward. But it's as twisted as the DNA helix itself. Meanwhile, Karen finds herself irresistibly drawn to another mystery that she has no business investigating - a mystery that has its roots in a terrorist bombing two decades ago. And again, she finds that nothing is as it seems.

Historia
For more than a year, over two brutal Northeast winters, the whole of Vermont was captivated by the hunt for a runaway golden retriever named Murphy. He was more than a missing dog - he was a target for capture, and journalistic obsession. This is that story. Murphy’s disappearance would unite the dog’s increasingly anxious owners with an impassioned reporter - Wilson Ring, the state’s correspondent for the Associated Press - and an online community of animal lovers. As Murphy kept running, the quest to bring him home, safe and sound, seemed more and more impossible.

Historia
Sous chef Aimee Tierney has the perfect recipe for the perfect life: marry her childhood sweetheart, raise a family, and buy out her parents’ restaurant. But when her fiancé, James Donato, vanishes in a boating accident, her well-baked future is swept out to sea. Instead of walking down the aisle on their wedding day, Aimee is at James’s funeral - a funeral that leaves her more unsettled than at peace.

tedious and dumb
Revisado: 03-28-19
I skipped to the end because I had to escape the tedium, as the book abandons the mystery for hundreds of pages to focus on the childish protagonist's building a cafe and a budding romance.

idiot characters
Revisado: 02-21-19
I like the drama setup and I don't mind the sound effects or accents, but I can't get over the idiotic moves the supposed intelligent characters keep making. and the main character is an extremely un-self-aware arrogant jerk and I can't stand her. kept me distracted on my long train commute, though, so it gets an extra star.

Historia
Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

inappropriate narration
Revisado: 02-07-19
the narrator speaks too slowly and rolls the words around in her mouth, making it difficult to follow the story. she also sounds much older than the character's supposed to be, which is a disconnect that prevents you from really connecting. i kept imagining a younger, quippier voice that would have made it much less of a slog.
