Two hours in the company of an aging man of New York; I felt as if I was hearing this tale over dinner in the company of an old, distant, very interesting friend. Marvelous!

The Infinite Possibilities of Relationships

This is my first Ann Patchett book, but it won't be my last. While The Magician's Assistant is very much in the "chick-lit" vein, the characters and situations are so original and interesting that it kept this man involved and entertained all the way from the first page to the last magic trick. While there is a substantial story here, of Sabine's journey from grief to new life, this is really a tale about the infinite possibilities within our human relationships, and about how we can limit or expand those possibilities.
While the female characters are finely and completely drawn, the men are not so convincing, and this represents the book's only small failing. As a piece, however, this is a work of delicacy that will bring joy and wonder to the reader who is open to it. Highly recommended for readers who love originality of plot and character-driven human stories.

Position Description: Fiction Editor for Stephen King's book manuscripts. Must be able to look Mr. King in the eye and tell him when he's gone off the rails and to supply solid advice about how to salvage a book gone bad. Must, for example, be able to say, "Steve, you did a great job of introducing the main character and making us feel his pain, but just as soon as he gets to Florida, your novel falls apart, dude. By the time the climax comes slowly, slowly around, you have lost your reader in a sea of "who cares" and "what the hells." Please rewrite the entire second half of this book, Steve, with something worth your name and reputation."

Compensation: Whatever it takes. Steve and his publisher can (and must) afford it.

Another Achievement in Suspense from McKinty

Here's what you need to know:

This is the new thriller from the author of the excellent Michael Forsythe trilogy ("Dead I May Well Be," "The Dead Yard" and "The Bloomsday Dead," all available from Audible. These three books introduced Michael Forsythe and told his epic story of blood and love. If you read (or listened to) the "Dead" books, you need no introduction or further encouragement. Just add to your cart and proceed with your latest injection of high-test McKinty.

If the aforementioned titles are new to you, you are in for a real treat. Mr. McKinty spins dark tales of revenge which glow with the reality of humanity. His characters and stories move with purpose, and take you along on adventures which defy interruption.

It's an old cliche that a story is impossible to put down, but in the case of Fifty Grand, it's the literal truth. Enjoy the ride!
