Lovely story telling intertwined with history.
Revisado: 11-23-22
I really enjoyed this fictional tale that explored the story of China's transformation over a 30 year span, the lives of adoptive families from multiple perspectives, and a rich tale of tea. I enjoyed many cups of tea as I listened to this story and have been inspired to keep trying more. There is still much to be learned.

Surprisingly insightful
Revisado: 02-03-21
I was not sure what to expect, which is a great way to go into any book. I found I learned a great deal about what works in Koch industries, but more than that I learned a lot about my own experiences outside of Koch industries in other fortune 500 companies and how they could have been different under the mbm model.

Historia
Chef José Andrés arrived in Puerto Rico four days after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island. The economy was destroyed, and for most people there was no clean water, no food, no power, no gas, and no way to communicate with the outside world. Andrés addressed the humanitarian crisis the only way he knew how: by feeding people, one hot meal at a time.

True humanitarian working model
Revisado: 01-25-19
It was sad and inspiring to hear how these chefs were able to overcome the red tape of politics to feed the people of Peurto Rico and to develop a model for future disaster relief. It is tragic that the biggest obstacles were not the hurricane devastated island, but the archaic system our government holds dear. I am not a chef, nor do I think I hold skills that would directly help World Central Kitchen, but I have shared this book on social media and made a couple of financial contributions since I began reading the book. As Jose points out, this hurricane will not be the last weather disaster and the support will be ongoing.

Clarity in the middle of the storm
Revisado: 01-18-19
I, like many, woke up to the news of Trump as President and was dumbfounded. I don't claim to be a devout Hillary fan, far from it, but I saw her as a qualified candidate for President, something I couldn't even consider saying about Trump. I have spent the last couple of years scratching my head at how he became President and how he continues to have support. I appreciated the way Hillary laid out the facts and her truths about what happened on the campaign trail. I have several blockers specifically for Facebook and for my general internet usage that blocked all ads, political posts, campaigns, etc.. The only news I got was from what I percieved as credible news sources and only on topics that I cared about, guess what, I never cared about Hillary's e-mails, so I managed to miss the whole scandal. It's amazing how having adequate skills at blocking garbage allowed me to live in a cave during campaigning. In many ways I'm glad I only heard what happened after the fact from Hillary herself. And thank you Hillary for running, for "coming back out of the woods", and for helping to lead the way through this mess. We continue to need strong leaders like Hillary. I hope this inspires many people. I know it has inspired me.

Wonderful way to bridge the gap
Revisado: 12-30-18
A beautifully written story of the women who became our first lady during a very trying time in many of lives. I agree with Michelle's messages whole heartedly that we need to take the time to hear each other's stories and relate to one another on a personal level so we can grow together as a nation. I honor all the work she did and continues to do to raise people up no matter the circumstances. I hope to see more from both Barack, Michelle, and others that share their message.

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Good story
Revisado: 12-29-18
As an autobiography and a case study on the psychology of someone who made it through SEAL training I find this book fascinating. David Goggins lays his truth out bare to the world in his own words, whether or not you approve of the language he uses.
I have to thank David for his courage in exploring and sharing his story with the world. I am surprised that while listening to his words being read back to him that he did not see the pattern that stuck out to me. I'm no professional, but I could not help but to notice that David repeatedly puts himself in situations where he is unprepared for challenges that require months if not years of training. While he exclaims his survival as triumphs, I see them as failed suicide attempts.
Best of luck David. I wish you nothing but the best and hope you find healing in your future, both physically and mentally. I highly recommend listening to The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk MD. It touches on research in early childhood trauma, PTSD, and many other topics that are alluded to in your book. Just as you found stretching did not make you soft, instead making you a better athlete than you were in your 20's, you may find that psychology isn't so soft either.
