Historia
Venice, June 2020. The city has returned to the Venetians during a merciful pause in the Covid pandemic, and few overseas visitors are to be seen. Yet Dominic Vicari, a British private investigator haunted by loss, has travelled across Europe to the tiny island of San Francesco del Deserto. The ancient monastery there, it is said, was founded by St Francis himself in the 13th century. Its population now consists of five Franciscan brothers and three pilgrims on retreat. Or, rather, two pilgrims and a dead man.

Love reader and fine with story
Revisado: 04-29-25
I listened to this on as a freebie because I enjoy the reader’s voice. Not sure how I feel about the writing or mystery but it was good enough. If the price of the other books in series isn’t too steep, will most likely listen to them as the main character, the “detective” is fun and would like to see how he got into sleuthing.

Was really good and then…
Revisado: 04-22-25
Was enjoying the book until the primary characters met and then the writing took a nosedive. Boring and repetitive dialogue took over and then just spewing “world building”. Serious need for editing and rewrites.

Historia
The ancient curse of Carnaby Castle has begun taking victims again—either that, or someone’s very cleverly done away with the new young bride of the philandering family patriarch, and the chief suspect is none other than Carnaby, London’s finest club steward. Anty Boisjoly’s wits and witticisms are tested to their frozen limit as he sifts the superstitions, suspicions, and age-old schisms of the mediaeval Peak District village of Hoy to sort out how it was done before Carnaby’s served his last scotch-and-soda.

Mayhap the author needs a thesaurus
Revisado: 03-09-25
Perhaps just don’t use an adverb at the beginning of a sentence. Perhaps it is not needed.
The voice of the elderly butler is painful through earbuds.
Otherwise, it is a decent addition to the series.

Loved this book despite the heart wrenching moments. And there are enough positive moments to maintain hope and soften the tragedies. The multitude of characters can be a little hard to follow but the author does his best to tag them enough to keep it flowing and not too confusing. Love this book.

Only interest have is how did this get published. Who thinks this is good enough to read then turn into audio book. And can I get the measly on sale cost of it back cause if I listen to any more of it am sure my brain will melt.

Could not finish. Gushing about every vegan meal as if no one had ever eaten vegetables. And the “mystery” has no teeth as wasn’t set up to care either way. Main character is a milksop over explaining every emotion and action. Dull!

And so the series nose dive
Revisado: 11-20-24
What started as a spunky protagonist surviving against the odds, slowly becomes morals over rationality and self preservation. And the Rosalind would have been on the streets starving by now as she takes every opportunity to refuse money, and the “gifts” that are alluded to are never shown. Also, the road blocks to love become obvious and tiresome. Guess it is a series issue. Also Rosalind’s moral snobbery and ability to perfectly read people except when convenient to add plot twists drag with time. Sigh.
