a unique and fun story
Revisado: 08-29-24
The world was great.
The creatures fantastic.
The magic system was soft and fun.
The story unique and fun.
The voices and character interaction good.
some small nit picking
the characters could be deeper but it's not really a character driven book. I'd say it's more about the story and world with that said I still really like the various characters.
A few of the traveling/herding bits got a little long and repetitive but by no means intolerable.
I love this author and I was once again very entertained and enjoyed the whole book.

Historia
Galva—Galvicha to her three brothers, two of whom the goblins will kill—has defied her family’s wishes and joined the army’s untested new unit, the Raven Knights. They march toward a once-beautiful city overrun by the goblin horde, accompanied by scores of giant war corvids. Made with the darkest magics, these fearsome black birds may hold the key to stopping the goblins in their war to make cattle of mankind.

beautifully written but slow
Revisado: 07-09-24
if your curious about the story but don't want to listen to a long slow tale of war, here is my summary.
overall good, it is a LOT of Galva explaining things and telling you her thoughts. Galva is serious, stoic, and has a bleak story. so it wasn't my favorite. I loved kinch and how his playful perspective lightened some of the darker parts of black tongue their. I loved galva as a serious side character/balance for kinch.
she's a cool character but I wasn't excited to have an entire book through her perspective.
here's the book break down
-glava talks about her 3 brothers
miguel-the entitled drunk bastard
paul-the one who should inherit the dukedom, capable military man.
Amel-the sweet poet and her best friend
-glava talks about her love interest/sister in arms innocent. her training and we see the very beginning of her war time.
-I actually skipped a few chapters and then the story picked up a bit
-Amel talks about the wizard, I liked those bits.
-first goblin encounter
-her first taste of her lady death church
-long marches and lots of unfair and cruel things
-meets the queen Miranda nothing happens she feels a spark
-first real battle they learn of the corvids scream paralyzing the goblins
-more unfair and cruel things, camp sickness, marching.
-her oldest brother becomes a bigger and bigger jerk.
-another battle she is injured then has lots of non-detailed sexy times with queen and other girl.
-she becomes a fan of lady death and it helps her in battle. they talk about the peace of that and why and how that is beautiful.
-Amel has some funny stuff with wizard.
-lots of death and cruel things
-drunk brother has storm shield won't give it to galva even after father tells him too because he lost it once gambling and he sucks. Amel steals it for galva but it makes his brother mad. he ends up killing/causing death of galvas male bird. so now we really hate him.
-war gets worse lots of marching.
-Amel dies trying to give galva shield
-everyone is dying, galva almost dies her bird and the queen save her, she finds her good for nothing brother raping a small village so she kills many of his company and leaves him and a few locked in a house when a small goblin army come and she escapes with villagers and girls. that was satisfying.
-father won't face truth about eldest son and he and king dishonor great military woman who basically saved them, who Paul loved. she committed suicide and he not long after. now galva is the only one left to inherit everything.
I did eventually get into it but it's slow, long, and darker then black tongue theif. it does give you way more insight to her kingdom, the goblins, but honestly it didn't add as much as I hoped. maybe it will for the next book but I certainly hope we continue with kinch and his story. at first I was like meh and had to start it a few different times then I was like alright, I'm enjoying it. then it was over and I'm like meh. like I said good writing it just doesn't seem like the most exciting g story to tell, to me. I'm not big on war, long marches, and military rigidity. I wanted more magic, adventure, humor, and well I just wanted more of black tongue theif. I actually relistened to black tongue theif and that book is just gold.

Revisado: 04-26-24
I was a little nervous about a longer story but it's just a longer version of the usual.
I love the characters, the story, the new adventures. I think I still prefer the original short stories but those are so original and neat with no extra fluff. so that's hard to beat, but I was not disappointed in the first novel.

Historia
A teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, Zorian is attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. A driven and quiet young man, he is consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, resenting the Kazinskis for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, Zorian has no time for pointless distractions, much less other people's problems.

if you like magic, mystery, character development, and a great story this is for you.
Revisado: 04-13-24
firstly the voices are a little shocking and dramatic at first but hang in there, you get used to it and it calms down.
not just the voices but I can see some getting bored at the begining, again just hang in there. once they drop the bomb of a great story on you it just keeps going.
my absolute favorite part was the character growth and development. he really is just an ordinary guy. slightly above average but not great, a cranky moody teen, fairly selfish, I love it!!! it's so hard to find realistic characters that don't drive you crazy or have some unrealistic redemption or super power.
on top of that the world and story is just so great. it was such a fun idea and there is so much to explore. I highly recommend.

if you liked the first book this one is a no brainer.
Revisado: 04-12-24
another great book. slightly less exciting then the first just because the first was such a surprise but this is no less great.
I would describe this series as a perfect onion so far. in that it is so beautiful layered. the plot just keeps Thickening, the world and magic keeps expanding the characters keep developing.
I love that it stays fairly emotionally light. it could get really dark and serious but it keeps it fun, dabbling just the right amount of heft.
I can't wait to keep adventuring, keep unraveling the mystery, keep exploring the world, and watching Zoran progress. If you liked the first book this one is a no brainer.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

fun Vampire werewolf twist
Revisado: 12-31-23
the good: plot/story, world, characters. definitely the narration!
it was a fresh take on the classic vampire, werewolf story.
I like the seductive mysterious male lead. a little obvious but still fun.
the maiden had some fun surprises but she was just ok.
the story definitely picked up second half. I really like the world she has built and want to explore it and see what happens.
the bad: story, characters.
it was first person which I don't love. she felt a little Mary Sue. she was almost great, strong through hardships, had grit, had some sass. but oh man she made sure to tell you how dangerous she was and everyone thought she was so dangerous. so a little too forced. she also didn't seem realistic. sheltered, abused, traumatized, yet so stubborn, risky, and socialized...not super believable. she tries to explain it but it still seems a bit of a stretch.
also way too much repetitive internal explaining. we get it, he makes you feel accepted. we get it, you feel betrayed. we get it, your horny! so she wasn't my favorite. didn't dispise her but she's just OK.
it felt like it could have been edited down a bit. there were times I was sick of hearing how she felt and wanted to get back to the story. a lot was predictable but it had enough other story lines to keep you interested.
also it was pretty hot and heavy for the romance, I didn't hate it but it was more then I expected again because she's supposed to be so chased and inexperienced...I suppose teenagers are super horny, but they are also terrified and so self conscious that I doubted her boldness.
overall I liked it. I like love stories with an actual story. so the world and plot are intriguing enough to keep me going. I like her abilities and the rawness of her emotions. she is in quite a tight spot so I want to see how she could possible get herself out of this. I'm excited for the potential growth and development. I see a dark future with a glimmer of light at the end. so "I'm intrigued."

a must read for new parents
Revisado: 07-10-23
I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old. I wish I had read this when I was pregnant or shortly after having my first as you don't really understand the anger and resentment until your experiencing it.
she outlines the various heartaches, anger, and humor that comes from having a child. it's like having a wonderful vent session with a friend you feel validated by shared experiences. not only that but she literally walks you through ways to solve common problems.
My husband and I have worked through most of the troubles but this would have offered a clearer path and we would have seen faster resolutions.
the divisions of chores, the clear asking for help, so much good advice in this book.
it does have some language if that bothers you but the message and story was heart warming.

huge potential that fell flat for me
Revisado: 05-10-23
the good: the world, magic, and story was fantastic.
the bad: dialogue, characters, telling instead of showing.
I thought this had a fantastic new story idea, I liked the underdog feeling, having to figure out loop holes etc. the world and magic felt vast and I wanted to explore it. I wasn't prepared for how "young adult" this really felt.
I could see a middle schooler/ JR high level being blown away by this book. but as an adult I hated everything being spoon fed to me. the main character often explains life lessons/wisdom to his younger sister and it made me want to gag.
it also is bad about telling instead of showing. telling me how cool characters are or how smart, stealthy etc. instead of just showing me and letting my feeble brain figure it out. as you can tell I felt patronized by the writing.
interesting my adult brother loved this book. he told me he cares way more about interesting stories, cool magic and great worlds and less about characters/writing.
-he hates: way of kings, and name of the wind.
-i love those
so everyone has there own taste, I couldn't get past the writing. do I think it's a bad book? No, not at all just not my cup of tea.
p.s. I never finished it so my review is only from the first half...if that much.

one of my new favorites
Revisado: 10-13-22
fantastic story, world, magic and characters.
why can't Disney use AMAZING stories like this instead of changing old characters races? this story makes me want to be a dragon queen and that's exactly what a good story should do. was I busy being upset by the lack of white characters? absolutely not!
the world is amazing I loved the characters the side characters I thought were especially good didn't feel flat at all. I felt the main character had just a bit of golden boy in the middle but it was brief. that was my only critique.
I can't wait to listen to the next book and I freaking loved the narrator. his voice was amazing!
can't wait to recommend this to everyone (there is one sex scene if that bothers anyone, you can see it coming and skip easily enough)
