Did you like Blackadder II, but wish there were more funny parts for women in it or that the whole show revolved around the Queen and that there were more contemporary references in it?

Do you wish American comedy was... well wittier, more historically referential and just better read in general?

Do you and your girlfriends fall over laughing doing personal parodies of Game of Thrones?

Do you wonder what Bernie Sanders would be like if he was born in the Middle Ages?

Would you like a dungeon of f@ck boys of your very own someday?

Then this is the radio comedy for you!

Kudos to Kate Mckinnon and bird pal (and real life sister) Emily Lynne for this podcast that kept me (somewhat) sane while moving house. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

This is (mostly) fun romp through hidden Victorian England, though there are some serious and disturbing subjects dealt with. I just wish it was longer and went into more detail in each chapter. It could have been twice as long without being a bit boring! I really felt it just scratched the surface of a lot of these topics and of course Stephen Fry's voice makes anything fantastic. I would listen to him read a phone book. However it is nice having the different voices too and adds to the drama. Victorian's views on "Begetting Handsome Children" (aka beautiful children are a result of good sex and women orgasming!) came as a real surprise to me. Also not to listener, Stephen Fry is not the author.

I have to say I really didn't like the way the female reader of Augie's parts of the novel chose to use a fake child's voice and that the voice was very scratchy sounding. It was very distracting.

I also found the parts of the book that were supposed to be funny like the teacher named Mr. Tushman and the farting nurse just seemed like an adult trying too hard to mimic kid-style humour and just wasn't funny at all.

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an excellent narrator! His voice is pitch perfect for DCI Peter Grant and the voice he does for Beverly Brook also fits her perfectly.

This episode is a real return to form. There is a lot at stake here with the two missing girls. I literally could not turn my ipod offer listening to this. It's very suspenseful. Also I love Peter Grant's unique take on the world and how he describes and explains what he sees and experiences.

I am so glad to see that Holdbrook-Smith will be narrating the next installment of this series. He's absolutely fantastic. There are characters from many different backgrounds in this series and he can do all their accents to a T. I especially loved the way he portrayed Mama Thames. (Having lived in Woolwich and known women who were originally from Nigeria, but had lived in South East London for some time, her accent is exactly how they sound).

As for the story itself-- well this is urban fantasy detective novel writing done by a confident expert and keen observer of modern London. The knowledge of policing in London is first rate. There is loads of suspense and I kept driving longer to find out what would happen next. I am so glad this is a series because there are plenty of finely drawn characters that I can't wait to see more of in the next installment, like Peter's jazz musician junkie father and strict Sierra Leonian mother.

Well worth the read!

Not on par with A Little Princess

I was expecting something along the lines of "A Little Princess" (one of my favourite books of all time with an excellent psychological characterization of a child protagonist) or "the Secret Garden" but was disappointed. The characters don't feel like real human beings at all, rather idealized types and the writer "tells" the audience about how the little boy is so good and kind and beautiful, rather than showing through actions. It goes on and on about how lovely he looks and parts that are meant to be cute or funny don't really feel that way. Ceddy is also way too sweet and goody goody to be a real child.

A story with heart!

What did you love best about Kicking and Dreaming?

I always loved Heart but this book really gave me a whole new level of respect for what it was like for Ann and Nancy coming up in the rock and roll world as women in the 1970s and 80s and the things you'd have to go through that male artists wouldn't. It certainly made me think.

What did you like best about this story?

Just the love they so obviously all had for each other and their descriptions of their lives with their family, especially their Mom and Dad. Just the love and respect and great sense of humour they all had with each other just shines through.

Which character – as performed by Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson – was your favorite?

They didn't perform any characters! They were themselves and completely honest about a lot of things that they could have just glossed over if they so chose. I loved their honesty and the fact that they read in their own voices.

Any additional comments?

One of the things that makes Heart's story unique is that Ann and Nancy were two sisters in a band together. It's something you don't often hear about, especially from a female perspective. They dealt with lots of things that are probably common in the music business, but the fact that they are women and had kids for some of it made it really different. I was also fascinated by the synchroncity of the two sisters together being involved with the two Fisher brothers at one point in the story and about the things that inspired their most famous songs and how they felt about their songs being used in ways that weren't really true to the songs' meaning.
