Josephine is of mixed race, but passes for a white woman. Born into a financially struggling household with a vindictive and jealous mother, her life seems hopeless until she meets Bernard Barrington, a white man from a rich family. It’s love at first sight for these two, but there are many obstacles to their happily ever after. And as their lives take a much darker path, it seems as if happy ever after is an impossibility.
What a ride. This book is not what it seems at first. Starting off as a romance in the first half, the s second half is full of suspense, lies, and murderous schemes. But that is the author’s strength to completely blow the reader’s mind as the story takes a direction they don’t see coming. Josephine is a very likeable and relatable protagonist while Bernard is at first the typical white and shining armor until you see not everything is so bright underneath. The story is full of surprises with a vast array of different genres mixed in it including romance, suspense, crime fiction, and drama. A great prequel to a very promising series.
