Historia
In Fluke, myth-shattering social scientist Brian Klaas takes a deep-dive into the phenomenon of random chance and the chaos it can sow, taking aim at most people’s neat and tidy version of reality. The book’s argument is that we willfully ignore a bewildering truth: but for a few small changes, our lives—and our societies—could be radically different.

Wonderful food for thought
Revisado: 04-08-24
I deeply enjoyed this book. The subject matter was interesting and truly, from my perspective, refreshing. We don't talk about contingency enough, especially in this age of overly simplified statistical analysis. Complexity and randomness play a much bigger role in our lives than many of us would care to acknowledge.

Historia
In this pathbreaking book, Jonathan Rauch reaches back to the parallel 18th-century developments of liberal democracy and science to explain what he calls the “Constitution of Knowledge” - our social system for turning disagreement into truth. By explicating the Constitution of Knowledge and probing the war on reality, Rauch arms defenders of truth with a clearer understanding of what they must protect, why they must do - and how they can do it.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Not convinced
Revisado: 12-18-22
I gave it a shot but it’s just too flimsy. There’s simply too much jumping to conclusions, reliance on anecdotal evidence, and wishful thinking dressed up as legitimate science. The attempts at colorful situational descriptions are just as superficial. Narration is not very interesting either.

Historia
When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Massive letdown
Revisado: 11-30-22
It’s like he’s trolling us from beyond the grave. It’s not what I was expecting and poorly conceived. Not reading between the lines on this one. It’s just bad. I was a huge fan and this is a massive letdown.

Historia
A razor-sharp thinker offers a new understanding of our post-truth world and explains the American instinct to believe in make-believe, from the Pilgrims to P. T. Barnum to Disneyland to zealots of every stripe...to Donald Trump. In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen demonstrates that what's happening in our country today - this strange, post-factual, "fake news" moment we're all living through - is not something entirely new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character and path.

Clarity
Revisado: 12-28-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book helped me understand the growing internal conflict I felt between the idea of something (fantasy) and the reality of it. I was almost always disappointed with the latter. This book brought clarity and calm to the emotionally charged present moment I find myself in.
What does Kurt Andersen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Tremendous vocal delivery and the ability to fully carry a subject and theme.
Any additional comments?
An enormously helpful book.

Runs off the rails in the most magical way

Any additional comments?
I was expecting a knowledgeable recount on AI that's what I got, but something else came along for the ride. At first, I found Kaplan's prelude on economic and political strategy off-putting. When those topics are finally exposed towards the end of the book, something very special happens. They create an empathic response that very few other books on the subject manage to do. Whether the arguments are scientific, philosophical, or ethical, there's a real emotional connection there. An important way of thinking and feeling about AI, devoid of the doomsday lore, makes this book truly unique.

Historia
Imagine a chimpanzee rampaging through a data center powering everything from Google to Facebook. Infrastructure engineers use a software version of this "chaos monkey" to test online services' robustness - their ability to survive random failure and correct mistakes before they actually occur. Tech entrepreneurs are society's chaos monkeys, disruptors testing and transforming every aspect of our lives from transportation (Uber) and lodging (AirBnB) to television (Netflix) and dating (Tinder).

Smug as f@#k
Revisado: 09-22-16
If you could sum up Chaos Monkeys in three words, what would they be?
Smug as f@#k
What did you like best about this story?
Great detail on Silicon Valley personalities, business practices, and corporate culture.
Which scene was your favorite?
The podcast excerpt following the epilogue.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not so much. The subjective tone can grate on you a bit but, when taken in bite size chunks, it hurts so good.
Any additional comments?
Despite having acquired a spiritual coating of second hand slime during consumption, I deeply value and respect this book for the balance it contributes to the modern tech narrative. This is a well crafted and important book for discriminating audiences.

Historia
An instant New York Times best seller, Dan Lyons' "hysterical" (Recode) memoir, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as "the best book about Silicon Valley," takes listeners inside the maddening world of fad-chasing venture capitalists, sales bros, social climbers, and sociopaths at today's tech startups. For 25 years Dan Lyons was a magazine writer at the top of his profession - until one Friday morning when he received a phone call: Poof. His job no longer existed. "I think they just want to hire younger people," his boss at Newsweek told him.

Would you listen to Disrupted again? Why?
This is the perfect blend of writing and narration done by the author.
Any additional comments?
A tremendous tale as funny as it is true. Beware that it may induce some anxiety if you're in tech, but that's a testament to it's validity. It will keep you hooked. Thank you Dan.

Feels like tabloidy fan fiction at best
Revisado: 04-10-14
What disappointed you about Haunted Empire?
There are some cheap tactics employed to get reactions which often create weak and confusing arguments. Grasping at straws and throwing everything at listeners also makes for uneven storytelling with poor continuity. There's no meat to anything. There's seemingly no point. It just tries to be controversial and angry for the sake of cashing in. This is poor journalism. I believe they call it trolling.
Has Haunted Empire turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I still love insider looks at the technology industry. It's a shame that Kane chose to go with such a cheap angle. Recent works by Vogelstein and Stone maintain my faith in the integrity of the work.
What three words best describe Arielle DeLisle’s voice?
Flat, focused, and terse.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
There's some good insight in there, it's just buried under heaps of dramatically skewed, inconsequential, and tangential information.
Any additional comments?
Imagine if Perez Hilton loved tech and decided to write a fan fiction piece on Apple. It reads like arguing with a crazy person.
