Historia
Presumed Innocent brings to life our worst nightmare: that of an ordinary citizen facing conviction for the most terrible of all crimes. It's the stunning portrayal of one man's all-too-human, all-consuming fatal attraction for a passionate woman who is not his wife, and the story of how his obsession puts everything he loves and values on trial - including his own life. It's an audiobook that lays bare a shocking world of betrayal and murder, as well as the hidden depths of the human heart. It will hold you and haunt you...long after you have reached its shattering conclusion.

Fabulous story, irritating music
Revisado: 07-28-24
The continuous music was distracting and added nothing. Narrator was excellent. And of course the story is compelling.

Historia
The seventeenth century was a revolutionary age for the English. It started as they suddenly found themselves ruled by a Scotsman, and it ended in the shadow of an invasion by the Dutch. Under James I, England suffered terrorism and witch panics. Under his son Charles, state and society collapsed into civil war, to be followed by an army coup and regicide. For a short time—for the only time in history—England was a republic. There were bitter struggles over faith and Parliament asserted itself like never before. There were no boundaries to politics.

Fine complete history
Revisado: 07-30-23
Very well done history. Two quibbles - the title comes from an ill fitting anecdote that the author shoehorns in; and, the reasons and rationales for Cromwell’s rise to power are hardly touched at all. But overall this is a magnificent retelling of a story with critical importance to our world today. We’ll worth your time.

Historia
A lost civilisation. A curse reborn. Dr Ben Kazin has only a blurred photograph and a gut instinct that there is a lost city to uncover somewhere beneath the Botswana cliffs. Soon, a whispered curse and a chance encounter with a local tribe lead him to discover much more than city foundations. The curse, it seems, is real, and will link Ben, his oldest friend and the woman they both love with a forgotten leader from 2,000 years ago, in a city of glory and honour that subsequently disappeared without a trace.

Superb overall
Revisado: 07-04-23
This was the first Wilbur Smith book I read, 45 years back. Yes, some aspects are hackneyed (viz romantic scenes and the treatment of women in general), some dated or overtly racist (a product of Smith’s time and place, whether a reader cares for it or not). But the imagination! The plotting! The pace! It’s just incredibly entertaining and worth the time. A word about the performance by Piers Hampton: Notwithstanding the criticism above of a South African, I thought Hampton’s performance masterful. He does English fop, Rhodesian trooper, educated South Africans, working class South African and English. And the African accents as well, all distinct, crafted, and consistent. Hampton is superb in this performance.

Historia
Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single history, in the time and place where they occurred: between Germany and Russia, when Hitler and Stalin both held power. Assiduously researched, deeply humane, and utterly definitive, Bloodlands will be required listening for anyone seeking to understand the central tragedy of modern history.

Historia
The Story of Russia is about how the Russians defined themselves―and repeatedly reinvented such definitions along the way. Moving from Russia’s agrarian beginnings in the first millennium to subsequent periods of monarchy, totalitarianism, and perestroika, all the way up to Vladimir Putin and his use of myths of Russian history to bolster his regime, celebrated historian Orlando Figes examines the ideas that have guided the country’s actions.

Historia
The relationship between the US and China, the world’s two superpowers, is peculiarly volatile. Their militaries play a dangerous game of chicken, corporations steal intellectual property, intelligence satellites peer, and AI technicians plot. The capacity for either country to cross a fatal line grows daily. Kevin Rudd, a former Australian prime minister who has studied, lived in, and worked with China for more than forty years, is one of the very few people who can offer real insight into the mindsets of the leadership whose judgment will determine if a war will be fought.

Historia
In this pathbreaking book, Jonathan Rauch reaches back to the parallel 18th-century developments of liberal democracy and science to explain what he calls the “Constitution of Knowledge” - our social system for turning disagreement into truth. By explicating the Constitution of Knowledge and probing the war on reality, Rauch arms defenders of truth with a clearer understanding of what they must protect, why they must do - and how they can do it.

Rauch has written an important and thoughtful work in defense of free speech. The last chapter, an imagined dialogue suggesting how best to confront enemies of free expression in the chaotic digital world of the 2020s, is comprehensive and illuminating. As important, it’s useful.

Excellent book (even if you know the story)
Revisado: 09-12-20
Guelzo does a superb job recounting the entire story of Gettysburg, taking on controversies along the way in a useful and convincing fashion. He captures the repeated unexpected turns of fate in the Union’s favor, esp on the third day. His last two chapters—on the aftermath in Gettysburg and Lincoln’s address—are outstanding codas to a unique and memorable history.
