Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Exceptionally Well Done
Revisado: 05-07-09
Regardless of your view of the material's accuracy, the narrator has done an AMAZING job with this book. Numerous voices (some female, some children) and very convincing tonal inflections make this a great listen.
I've listened to Audible books (and others) for ten years now, and it's never been better than this.

This is the remarkable story of the English language; from its beginnings as a minor guttural Germanic dialect to its position today as a truly established global language. The Adventure of English is not only an enthralling story of power, religion, and trade, but also the story of people, and how their lives continue to change the extraordinary language that is English.

AMAZING !! The narrator deserves a medal !!!
Revisado: 09-26-05
As an American, I find this book a bit more difficult to grasp than a native of the U.K. would find; that having been said, I must say this narrator deserves an award of some kind - his ability to pronounce these words (in many dialects, some ancient) is amazing!
Great story line, quite entertaining and educational (even for a Yank).

The pathways opened by this ancient theater form can transform a presenter's most fundamental approaches to teaching, training, and communicating.

Written in 350 B.C., Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics professes happiness as life's goal. How do we achieve this goal? Not through the satisfactions that come from pleasure, wealth, or fame. According to Aristotle, the true path to happiness lies in contemplation of philosophic truth.

How did this rendition get past an editor?
If it were any dryer, I could lose weight just by listening to it (assuming I didn't hurl myself out the window first).

Say what you will about the content, but this is the DRYEST read I've ever had to endure. Even the sections on Monica are read with ZERO emotion - is English her second language?

Historia
Darwin's theory of evolution is accepted by most educated Americans as simple fact. This easy acceptance, however, hides from us the many ways in which evolution - as an idea - shapes our thinking about a great many things. What if this idea is wrong? What if "evolution" is just a word that covers up scientific ignorance of how the wonders of the living world could have been created? Berkeley law professor Phillip Johnson looks at the evidence for Darwinistic evolution the way a lawyer would - with a cold dispassionate eye for logic and proof.

Should Be Required Reading/Listening
Revisado: 08-05-03
The data here is a great beginning to the counter-offensive needed to combat the "Stupid Science" that continues to both defy simple logic and be taught in public schools. Why must those who "claim" to be Scientific refuse (with hyper-religious zeal) to calmly discuss the possibility/probability of Supernatural Creation?
Should be read/heard by all, especially by those who would be terrified by the prospect of the existance of a Biblical God.

Historia
No other work has portrayed with such clarity the march of Rome's empire into anarchy and ruin, and no other historian has given his readers so much to ponder in their own situations. Concentrating on the 13 centuries beginning with the rule of Antennas Pius (138-161 A.D.) and ending with the fall of the Empire in the West, this author-abridged volume chronicles "the triumph of barbarism and religion" in the disruption of the united Empire, the rise of Christianity, the progress of the Asiatic Huns, and the revolt of the Goths. Never far below the surface of this narrative is Gibbon's sense...

Great, but you must pay close attention
Revisado: 08-05-03
Don't get me wrong - this work is CLASSIC, and it should be.
The reader has a proper British accent, as it should be.
But this rendering is lo-fi, and it requires the listener's apt attention, lest you miss a portion and have to "rewind." And, as is proper for a work of many hours, one should only listen to a chapter at a time, which would still take 70-120 minutes each, in most cases.
(Begin at chapter 8 for a masterful telling of early Christian history.)
Roll the windows down, shut off the cell phone, turn up the volume on your Otis, and prepare to triple your Historal Knowledge base !!!
