Historia
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

Time line jumps --
Revisado: 11-14-23
I enjoyed this book and how all the characters were interwoven. The one gripe I have is that the time line goes back and forth from the present to the past. It was like reading diary entries that were jumbled up. I have noticed that authors and movies tend to use this technique of time jumping. I prefer a story be beginning, middle, end.

Good info - could have been condensed
Revisado: 10-28-23
I am at the 7th episode and gave up listening and went to Wikipedia to get the conclusion. The info was good, but like other reviewers, the series was a bit too long. Narrator was good. Kudos to get interviews from the actual players involved with the investigation.

In the mid-'60s, Helen Gurley Brown, author of the groundbreaking Sex and the Single Girl, took over the ailing Cosmopolitan magazine and revamped it into one of the most successful brands in the world. At a time when magazines taught housewives how to make the perfect casserole, Helen reimagined Cosmo and womanhood itself, championing the independent, ambitious, man-loving single woman.

Good research on a woman we knew "of"
Revisado: 09-15-19
This was a good read of a woman most of us only saw one side of. At first, the narrator seemed to be in a hurry or in a rush when reading. Or like she was trying to tell us so much before hopping of the bus. It settled down after awhile or I got used to it.
I was growing up when Cosmo was hitting its stride and those covers were eye catching. I didn't know much about Helen and this book was well researched. I remember all those quizzes and that famous centerfold!

More mysteries & less cast of characters
Revisado: 06-15-18
IQ is a unique character with a good back story. I was anxious to see what would be in the second book of the series. Unfortunately, there wasn't as much mystery/case solving as I wanted. His intelligence and ways of solving cases is what draws me to the character. IQ took on a lame case and the flood of characters came in. Also, the quick way a major plot point was thrown in at the last chapter was a bit jarring. Let's see IQ get his mojo on some tough cases in a possible third book and keep the cast of characters to a smaller number.
The narrator did a great job

Historia
A resident of one of LA's toughest neighborhoods uses his blistering intellect to solve the crimes the LAPD ignores. East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the neighborhood's high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, lost children unrecovered. But someone from the neighborhood has taken it upon himself to help solve the cases the police can't or won't touch. They call him IQ. He's a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence.

IQ + TMZ = Mystery & new brand of 'detective'
Revisado: 05-08-18
As another reviewer stated, I thought IQ was going to be solving cases through unconventional means for a number of folks. This is sorta true - but it does focus on one case. I thought that could have been wrapped up sooner and made room for others.
The narrator did a spot on job. Yes, there is a substantial amount of cursing and pejorative terms. I winced a few times and had to remind myself that the characters spoke this way and that was the way it was. If you are offended by this type of language, pass on this book. I would like to see another book of this character a few years out after he has matured and honed his talent

Historia
Forty years’ accumulation of art, antiques, and family photographs are more than just objects for Stanley Peke - they are proof of a life fully lived. A life he could have easily lost long ago. When a con man steals his houseful of possessions in a sophisticated moving-day scam, Peke wanders helplessly through his empty New England home, inevitably reminded of another helpless time: decades in Peke’s past, a cold and threadbare Stanislaw Shmuel Pecoskowitz eked out a desperate existence in the war-torn Polish countryside, subsisting on scraps, dodging Nazi soldiers.

Get a U-Haul
Revisado: 06-16-14
I enjoyed the premise of the story -- it moved at a good pace -- though at times when I was listening - I had to rewind a bit to realize the story was in flash back. There is a lot of "thinking" narration and it goes back and forth from the past to the present. I wanted to count how many times the author told us the main character's age. That was a bit repetitive.
Like other reviews - this isn't necessarily a "thriller" -- more of a "who dun it" mystery-ish story. I will look at other selections from this author. The narrator was good.

Mix up the formula - the character deserves it!
Revisado: 04-19-14
I have heard all 4 of the Gray Men novels - the narrator is spot on! The action and suspense is very exciting.
The formula of the series is starting to be evident after 4 installments. Mix it up some so it won't be predictable in future installments. I know Mr. Greaney is the heir apparent to the Clancey series - will this be the last Gray Man?

Like reading a diary or a "Dateline" episode
Revisado: 12-01-13
The reviewer from "O" magazine described this as a thriller. Not. You know the premise way too much from the get go and we hear all about this story as if we are reading a diary of all the characters or watching a "Dateline" episode. A few surprises - I was glad to get to the end. I will scrutinize my "thrillers" more carefully in the future.

Narrator ruins this story
Revisado: 12-10-12
I am about 1/2 through this book -- The narrator has a terrible case of dry mouth. You can hear him licking his lips and other sounds due to dry mouth. You also hear him turn the pages, turn away from the microphone and then pause as he turns the pages.
I am surprised this got through Quality Assurance at the recording studio.

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly.

Hug a puppy.... this is a bit dark
Revisado: 10-20-12
Check List for listening to “Sharp Objects”
1. Watch some comedies on TV or look at LOL Cats website – you need the balance.
2. Play with puppies or roll around in the yard. Release some of the angst that you will feel.
As one other reviewer stated – there weren't any characters that I rooted for. Lots of crazy women who crave attention and need to get out more.
I will continue to listen to Ms. Flynn’s novels. She is a good writer. Ann Marie did a good job on narration.
