Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Extraordinary
Revisado: 07-07-23
I just finished this amazing novel and I already miss Demon and his beautiful, authentic story of resilience, friendship, love, and hope. I don’t know Charles Dickens enough to compare this to David Copperfield, but Demon does seem to be a modern Appalachian spin of the classic?
The narrator is so talented in bringing this boy and his circumstances to life. Ms. Kingsolver has woven the intricate issues of the broken foster care system together with the joys and pains of growing up so masterfully. As Demon grows up, his narration evolves to portray his developing conscience and morality amidst his heartbreaking challenges. The character of Demon reminded me that even though we come from different places/backgrounds with money or no money, parents or no parents, health or sickness, we all are really just looking for a purpose and for love. And, I love his quest to get to the ocean! I would give this 10 stars if I could!

Can they just grow up ???
Revisado: 02-26-23
I loved the beginning of this novel. But how long can it take for the main characters in this vapid story to be adults? They act and talk like 7th graders …. it just goes on and on with the whining and living in out the past ….the vocal fry, the weird millennium talk from the female Kenna , the attempted ‘tough talk ‘ from the male narrators- omg … so sorry I wasted a credit

I’m glad I came across this gem. A meaningful metaphor about how we shape our own lives. It would be a nice gift for a friend who is ready to make a change…

Historia
The Frosts are a typical American family. Barb and John, married almost 50 years, are testy and bored with each other...who could blame them after all this time? At least they have their daughters - Barb's favorite, the perfect, brilliant Juliet; and John's darling, the free-spirited Sadie. The girls themselves couldn't be more different, but at least they got along, more or less. It was fine. It was enough. Until the day John had a stroke, and their house of cards came tumbling down. Now Sadie has to put her career as a teacher and struggling artist in New York on hold....

Blah blah blah
Revisado: 08-15-20
Usually I like this author - but this was disappointing...just a long rambling mess with no purpose about unhappy women. Ugh. The voice of Sadie was just beyond annoying and the mother was such a miserable martyr. Not sure what the dolphin had to do with anything- can’t believe I finished it

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Nice, but sad and frustratingly disappointing
Revisado: 11-11-18
Started out interestingly enough... dragged on and on to an anticlimactic and predictable resolution. I really hoped the story would ultimately validate the boring courtroom scenes. Unfortunately , I had to work to keep my interest to finish this one.

Narration is good...
Revisado: 06-26-18
But this sad story goes on and on with too much depressing and mundane dysfunction. More of an exploration of grief than I had expected from the title and reviews.

Disgusting waste of credit
Revisado: 07-21-17
I finished this horrible recording to see if it somehow redeemed itself- but it did not. The story and characters are intriguing at first, but it drags on and on with minutia, corny similes and the most gruesome violence and sadistic torture, mutilation and rape. I was literally rolling my eyes and skipping chapters because it got so repulsive, the characters grew more and more ridiculously shallow/ like cartoon characters- the narrator has some interesting variations of different voices, but the writing is so awful, it's impossible to appreciate the narration. This novel was repeatedly popping up as recommended for me blah blah...and DID NOT indicate on the summary that it contained such graphic descriptions of women being tortured and raped. I am disappointed about that. I WILL NOT listen to anything else written by this psycho author.

I can't listen to this and keep track of what's happening. Wish I hadn't used a credit! I like the idea of this story and the narrator, but I'm just not in the mood for this fairy tale/fantasy genre right now. Maybe I will revisit this later.... right now it's not interesting, or entertaining to me😞

So Good and I can't stop thinking Franny...
Revisado: 10-12-16
I liked Commonwealth- the Keating girls , how they blend in with their instant step- siblings...the tragedy, the love, the childhood antics, the mistakes they make as they careen into young adulthood- the self centered marriage of their parents that changed their lives...seeing them through until the old age of the parents - felt like I was eavesdropping on real people. Love the development of Franny and the connections of her choices - that seem out of her control until the end! Loved it!

Excellent, Fast-paced, Great Narration
Revisado: 09-14-16
I was so mesmerized by the narrator from the first lines of the novel. I didn't expect the murder/mystery aspect to be so brutal and violent, but the other layers of the story - (romance / family dysfunction/ criminal insanity/ forensics/parental neglect/VietNam vets and memories of warfare/cancer/alcoholism/ autism) were woven delicately throughout the plot like silk. The narrator's tone and pacing were spot on. I loved the story line which had many twists and unexpected turns. The characters, Joe, Lila. Carl and Jeremy, were soulful, vulnerable and authentic. I cried, laughed and held my breath at least once in each chapter. But it was the narrator's performance of the young tormented protagonist that made this one of my favorites!
