Historia
Fatima, Portugal, 1917: The Virgin Mary appears to three peasant children, sharing with them three secrets, two of which are soon revealed to the world. The third secret is sealed away in the Vatican, read only by popes, and not disclosed until the year 2000. When revealed, its quizzical tone and anticlimactic nature leave many faithful wondering if the church has truly unveiled all of the Virgin Mary's words or if a message far more important has been left in the shadows.

More Credible than Traditionalists will Like
Revisado: 09-11-23
Warning: this review might give some of the ending away. My only critique with the book, this fictionalized account - of what the Third Secret of Fatima might really have been- is not what the ending contained, but what it didn’t - and that the author’s imagination didn’t seem open-minded - enough. If the “Mother of God” (or “Divine Maternal”) really appeared to poor shepherd children, would She really not have warned them against the false religious authority - of an institution of men - that cover up crimes against children? Would She really not tell them God is already within their Souls, much as “Christ” was in her - as Mary on earth?

Excellent, gripping mystery

This was an excellent story with good pace, interesting, well developed characters and a unique plot - with twists. I felt touched and satisfied at the end, only wished the story wasn’t over, because it was that good.

Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Reminded me a little bit of “Rebecca” by Daphne DeMaurier
Revisado: 12-02-21
This was an interesting book for me ~ I was torn between enjoying imagining the cold hearted little villainess receiving her just deserts - and noticing her husband’s lack of awareness - of his own psycho sexual immaturity. The closest thing the protagonist came to “not vilifying”, but respecting any woman he came across as an equal adult or peer ~ was still too fatherly, patronizing, misogynist, grandiose, or objectifying. The psychological & cultural pathologies revealed through all the characters, none the less, in my opinion, added interest to this book.

Fascinating mystery involving a toxic parental personality ~ and the well intended, who don’t realize the consequences of tolerating it in their lives. I will definitely be seeking out more books written by Elizabeth George.

Pretty Prose & People, Questionable Substance
Revisado: 11-27-20
This book was like overhearing the sometimes interesting, sometimes depressing, personal perspectives of family members struggling to understand their emotions (or that they even had emotions) over a long period of time. I kept waiting for the characters to wake up, realize where they had misjudged one another, been hypocritical, become, well - more likable ~ or for there to be some huge, revelatory surprise. For me, that moment never quite arrived.

The story was so compelling one could almost overlook that the narrator, although clear and with a lovely accent, had a repetitive tone as she told it.

Thoroughly enjoyable, intelligent and interesting mystery/psychological drama/romance/thriller that held my attention. Very like-able main character with which one can sympathize and relate. This book had some depth to it and did not disappoint. I did not want it to end.
