Historia
Is someone else's problem your problem? If, like so many others, you've lost sight of your own life in the drama of tending to a loved one’s self-destructive behavior, you may be codependent—and you may find yourself in this book. With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie’s own life and the lives of those she’s counseled, Codependent No More helps you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries, and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom, and happiness.

It's mostly for people in relationships with substance abusers (al-anon)
Revisado: 04-03-24
I have a lot of merging tendencies, but I have never been in a relationship with a substance abuser or abused substances myself. I struggled to find relevancy to my situation in this book. The author specializes in codependency related to substance abuse and people in that situation will find the greatest value in this book. It also makes a lot of assumptions about what is involved in codependency that isn't true for me. For example, I'll orient my whole life around a partner, but I don't beat myself up in my head, etc. I wish I had found more value here. Oh well.

Historia
As polyamory continues to make its way into the mainstream, more and more people are exploring consensual nonmonogamy in the hope of experiencing more love, connection, sex, freedom and support. While for many, the move expands personal horizons, for others, the transition can be challenging, leaving them blindsided and overwhelmed. Beyond the initial transition to nonmonogamy, many struggle with the root issues beneath the symptoms of broken agreements, communication challenges, increased fighting and persistent jealousy.

Historia
Designed to guide the listener on a journey into their own sacred sexual awakening, this book shares true stories from 20 visionary pioneers in the sexual shamanism movement, all of them associated with the International School of Temple Arts (ISTA), a mystery school that works to illuminate the path of sexual shamanism and heal the split between sex and spirit, release the shame surrounding sexual awakening, and inspire more sexual liberation around the world.

I'm 3.5 hours in and I'm going to abandon this book because it is STILL just giving personal backstory without a lot of clear lessons for the reader. I've been searching for the there there, and have been diving into every book I can find on this topic, but this one has not felt worth my while. I also can't believe that they apparently paid a narrator for this book; it's one of the most stilted narrations I've heard. Someone reading from the page very obviously, and overpronouncing 't's like in wat-ter. I assumed it was the author reading because it was so unprofessional, but I guess it's not. Don't waste your money.

Historia
Women have been shamans since time immemorial, not only because women have innate intuitive gifts, but also because the female body is wired to more easily experience altered states, such as during the process of birth. Whether female or male, the altered states produced by psychedelics and ecstatic trance expand our minds to tap into and enhance our feminine states of consciousness as well as reconnect us to the web of life.

Narration is god awful
Revisado: 03-09-22
Tragic to have this material recorded by sometime with such a shrill and clipped voice. Soooo hard to pay attention to the material and not the extremely challenging voice that is reading it

Historia
At the age of five, Megan Phelps-Roper began protesting homosexuality and other alleged vices alongside fellow members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. Founded by her grandfather and consisting almost entirely of her extended family, the tiny group would gain worldwide notoriety for its pickets at military funerals and celebrations of death and tragedy.

So poignant, so well written, so moving
Revisado: 10-10-19
I never leave reviews, but felt compelled to share my thoughts on how important the message of this book is, and point out how beautifully Megan Phelps-Roper expresses her journey within its pages. In many ways, this book is a devastatingly compelling argument for nuance and open mindedness, and it begins by asking that the reader take an open minded look at how the Westboro Baptist Church came to undertake its actions in the first place. I honestly couldn't stop listening and binged the entire book within 24 hours.
To hear Megan's kind and generous fleshing out of how such radicalized positions came to seem reasonable within her family, to her descriptions of the seeds of her certainty's unraveling, to the lessons she draws about the arrogance of narrow mindedness and being certain that our ideas are more right than anyone else's... Megan is a testament to growth mindset if I have ever seen one.
I was raised without religion in a bastion of liberalism, and from my own (far distant) lens found so many lessons about how any clinging to 'rightness' is dangerous, no matter which angle you're coming from. At so many points throughout the book, I wanted to hug her, applaud her, and be her best friend. I am truly impressed not only by the journey she undertook, but also by the self awareness it must have taken to convey that arc so poignantly.
Well done, Megan. I eagerly await what you publish next.

Historia
Two-thirds of us have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience, or ACE, such as abuse, neglect, parental substance dependence, or mental illness. Even though these events may have occurred long ago, they have the power to haunt us long into adulthood, and now we have found that they may even contribute to lifelong illness. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, the founder/CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness and recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award, expands on similar topics as in her popular TED talk.

Fascinating and very well written and read
Revisado: 01-24-19
I was surprised how much I liked this book. Never knew much about the topic and bought it on a whim because it was the daily deal. The author is both an inspiration and a highly engaging personality. Reading this inspired me to learn more about childhood trauma, not because I myself experienced it, but because of the imprint I can see it having on so many people in my life. I've read many dozens of audible books and this is the first one I've felt compelled to write a review for. Keep it up Dr Burke Harris!
