Historia
Indiana's Monroe House is a place of mystery, darkness, and strange occurrences. It has a reputation for occult rituals and violent paranormal activity that has sent visiting investigators running off into the night. The discovery of human bones in the basement, the identity of which remain unexplained to this day, may hold some of the answers. But the Monroe House holds its secrets close, and has been known to lash out at those who spend time within its walls.

Spooky and thought provoking
Revisado: 07-09-22
I enjoyed this book, especially learning about the scientific approach to the Monroe House investigation. Author Richard Estep provided plenty of quantifiable evidence to balance out the emotional evidence. Some of the repetitive information was tedious by the end. The narrator had an odd manner of reading (for example, putting emphasis on the wrong words) that took away from my enjoyment. I think this is the first time I've read a Richard Estep book; will definitely be looking for more -- but hopefully a different narrator.

Historia
Charlie still likes to think of himself as a normal kid. But what's normal about being a demon-slaying preteen with an encyclopedic knowledge of Hispanic and Latino mythology who can partially manifest nearly any animal trait found in nature? Well, not much. But, Charlie believes he can get used to this new "normal," because being able to sprout wings or morph fins is pretty cool. But there is a downside: It means having to constantly watch his back for La Mano Peluda's sinister schemes. And when the leader of La Liga is kidnapped, Charlie's sure they're at it again.

My kids insisted that I rate this 5 out of 5 stars
Revisado: 03-28-20
This sequel was just as good — if not better than — the first book in the series. I’m just fascinated by the folklore and legends that whirled around this adventure. Castle of Bones was a bit darker than book one, and the danger felt much more ominous. I highly recommend reading this series in order because the character development is so important to understanding the events.
We have this book in both print and audio, but we leaned heavily toward the audio. In print, you can see the spelling of the unfamiliar names and words. It’s quite a long book, which is intimidating for many kids. I think the formatting of dialogue paragraphs makes a difference there.
The audio version is terrific! The same narrator voices both the first and second book which is so helpful for continuity. Hearing the Spanish phrases in an authentic tongue makes the story really come alive. There were times when the narrator had an awkward rhythm to his fluency, but it didn’t impact the message. My son said he wished there would be more voices, comparing it to The Graveyard Book full-cast production. I can see what he’s saying there.

A cute romance
Revisado: 03-28-20
This was one of my free Audible monthly picks. It was a cheesy enemies-to-lovers plot. This was the first time I'd read anything by this author, so I wasn't sure what to expect. There was a lot of profanity, and some not-so-subtle innuendos. Not my taste at all, but if you can overlook that, it's a cute story with some funny moments.

Good for a short read
Revisado: 03-28-20
I got this as a free Audible download. It's not long enough to really develop the characters or a deep storyline, so but I knew that going in. It was totally worth listening to while folding laundry and milling around the house.
I'd read the author's previous book For Better and Worse, so I had an idea about her writing style. Buried Deep has a similar tone. Hunt's narrators and characters in general remind me of Kaira Rouda's books. Hunt doesn't mind allowing some of the predictable to happen -- but she's not going to follow the rules in all respects. I like that about her stories!

I wasn't the right reader for this book
Revisado: 03-28-20
I listened to the audiobook version. It went on forever. Long Bright River has exceedingly high marks from everyone else, it seems, so I think I just wasn't the right reader for this book.
The plot isn't bad -- it focuses around two sisters, but primarily on the one who is a policewoman (Mickey). In some ways, I saw myself in Mickey. She felt so different from her family, and struggled to find her place in the world. In other ways, though, she was very prickly and hard to like. Her relationship with her young son Thomas was odd and fragile. I felt so sorry for Thomas; it seemed like Mickey didn't know how to really connect emotionally with him. The end of the book was so anti-climactic (she named off about 50 names, in a I Chronicles kind of way) that I stopped listening somewhere in the last 30 minutes.

Historia
On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person - but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, an addictive thriller.

Creepy with just the right touch of supernatural
Revisado: 05-19-19
I listened to the Audible version of this book and enjoyed it! It got me through a looong road trip, making the 12+ total hours go by so quickly. The narrator did a super job, and I'd love to read more books narrated by her.
I have to say that there were several loose threads at the end of the book that frustrated me. I wanted to say, "But...but...what about THIS?!" There were SO MANY directions and details the author could have implemented to make this a delightful mystery. Instead, some parts were like a bad soap opera.
Hal's character got on my last nerve. She went into a bad situation trying to keep under the radar, but her helpless act drove me nuts. It was as if she couldn't spit out a full sentence without hem-hawing around.
This review sounds like I hated the book, and that's not the case. It was charming in its dark-mansion style. I loved the tarot card element, which added a lot of creepiness on its own. Though it's not my favorite Ruth Ware book, it was worth reading.

This was so different from other thrillers I’ve read. Loved the format of phone conversations. The voice actors were superb! Some parts were a little confusing, but overall it was an original story that surprised me.

Mesmerizing historical fiction
Revisado: 03-28-19
I received a free copy of this audiobook thanks to the author. Opinions shared are mine.
This story brought history to life for me! My husband grew up near Gettysburg, so I’ve visited the area many times over the years. I will have a new perspective on the sites when we travel there again.
This book covers the days just before the battle all the way through November 1963. It’s quite a long book! I learned so much about the time period, slavery, and the aftermath of the battle. The story inspired at least a dozen Google searches!
Author Jocelyn Green’s trademark style makes this a standout. Descriptive and almost poetic, the story comes to life through her writing. It’s obvious that extensive research went into this book.
The audible narrator did a great job of pacing and using inflection. She used different voices and accents, and even sang a couple of songs! Sometimes the timing of pauses was a little off, making it hard to follow dialogue, but overall it was a great listening experience.
