Historia
Hailed as the “first freedom”, free speech is the bedrock of democracy. But it is a challenging principle, subject to erosion in times of upheaval. Today, in democracies and authoritarian states around the world, it is on the retreat. In Free Speech, Jacob Mchangama traces the riveting legal, political, and cultural history of this idea.

Sensational book, problematic reading
Revisado: 07-15-23
Mchangama’s book is everything I had hoped for and more. It lays out the history of free speech elegantly and in fascinating detail. The narrator, while having a fine voice, serves up some excruciating mispronunciations. I run into this problem too often, and the blame lies with the publishers. They seem to have little concern for the excellence of their products. Don’t let that discourage you from buying this fine book.

Historia
David Storey's This Sporting Life, set in the industrial north, brilliantly conveys 21-year-old steelworker Arthur Machin's love of his rugby league, his success on the field, and his feelings towards his widowed landlady, as well as his bouts of doubt and anxiety.

Quite good but for the music
Revisado: 05-28-23
Story’s book is fine, and it’s no wonder that Lindsay Anderson made a superb movie of it with a Storey script. I think the reading just fine, but the music is a real pain and should be expunged.

Historia
Edited and annotated by H. L. M., this is a selection from his out-of-print writings. They come mostly from books - the six installments of the Prejudices series, A Book of Burlesques, In Defense of Women, Notes on Democracy, Making a President, A Book of Calumny, Treatise on Right and Wrong - but there are also magazine and newspaper pieces that never got between covers (from the American Mercury, the Smart Set, and the Baltimore Evening Sun) and some notes that were never previously published at all.

Sensational Mencken
Revisado: 06-24-22
Amid the present cacophony there is no Mencken to be found; not even close. So it is with immense pleasure that one rereads, and in this case listens, to Mencken’s uncensored ideas conveyed in his glistening and unequaled use of American English. Gardner makes the text his own, as always. My lone complaint is that on the Apple Watch the chapters are displayed only numerically, and so it is difficult to figure out how to get back to a particular chapter.
Starting next with Mencken’s Notes on Democracy, I’d be a happy cherub if the complete works of H. L., Thomas Szasz, and Richard Mitchell were reproduced in audio.

Historia
Thomas Szasz's classic book revolutionized thinking about the nature of the psychiatric profession and the moral implications of its practices. By diagnosing unwanted behavior as mental illness, psychiatrists, Szasz argues, absolve individuals of responsibility for their actions and instead blame their alleged illness. He also critiques Freudian psychology as a pseudoscience and warns against the dangerous overreach of psychiatry into all aspects of modern life.

Important book, annoying reading
Revisado: 11-04-20
It’s great to have the Szasz book available. It introduced the great and courageous thinker to the world. The reader, on the other hand, incessantly pronounces a hard “A” before words beginning with consonants. Doesn’t Tantor have literate editors?

Historia
In her latest forays into the American scene, Joan Didion covers ground from Washington to Los Angeles, from a TV producer's gargantuan "manor" to the racial battlefields of New York's criminal courts. At each stop she uncovers the mythic narratives that elude other observers: Didion tells us about the fantasies the media construct around crime victims and presidential candidates; she gives us new interpretations of the stories of Nancy Reagan and Patty Hearst; she charts America's rollercoaster ride through evanescent booms and hard times that won't go away.

Vintage Didion, average reading
Revisado: 11-01-20
The essays are splendid, as one might expect from Didion. The reader is easy to understand and doesn’t get tiresome, but offers up some mispronunciations that annoy.
